I have a lot of rifles (AK's, AR's, FN/FAL, etc. etc.) but want to get an inexpensive plinker for some target fun. What is the deal with the Hi-Point 9mm carbines? Can anyone who has one fill me in on whatever? Reliability? Ease of cleaning? Accuracy? Black vs. chrome? Open sights vs. adding a red dot? Do they make more than 10 rd. mags for this? Many thanks for any and all advice.
i got mine a couple weeks ago and i love it. i got the chrome one and ended up powder coating the chrome, the reason i bought chrome was because it was 120.00 new in the box. get the blued one unless you want to powder coat it or like chrome, the chrome looks out of place to me and made it look like a toy gun. they are very reliable and accurate and will last forever , mine has not jammed yet. not to bad to clean if you have time to take it apart and do a good job as you should do with any firearm after a few hundred rnds. the open sights work good and i am putting a red dot scope on mine soon since they come with a weaver scope rail also, i will end up putting the laser sight on too for night use, i ordered the factory muzzle brake for it last week after being told it works good for recoil and flash control. they make a 15 rnd mag for law enforcement use only, were stuck with the 10's. i read in a post that some hi-power and s&w high cap mags will work but which models i dont know. i have 4 factory mags right now which is fine. get one for the money you cant go wrong, sure beats a .22 for about the same costs.;)

a friend of mine bought a 9MM pistol.....it's the only pistol that you need 2 people, a screw driver and hammer to take apart and put together....it was reliable and some what accurate.

Dunno if your still reading this or not, but to answer your question... I purchased the Hi-Point 9mm carbine back when they first came out for around $225, has since then came down significantly. I own several semi-automatic rifles and the hi-point for what it is, is one of my most favorite rifles to shoot.
I have put well over 6k rounds down the barrel of my hi-point of wolf 9mm FMJ as I have purchased 6 cases in the last few years and have no problems with function what so ever with them... BUT, the hi-point carbine DOES NOT like Hollow Points in 9mm under the weight of 147 grains, didnt matter what manufacturer or bullet type I put in, if it was under 147 grains it would stove pipe every other round in the class of 115 grains, every other 4-5 rounds with 125 grain, but at 147 grains it had 0 malfuntions what so ever.
Accurate??? It was rather very accurate right out of the box, hitting the 8" shoot n c target with all 10 rounds out to 50 yards at stock configuration. I have since then installed the muzzlebreak, a harris ultralight bipod ( required modification to the stock ) and installed a 3-9x40 mm scope with illuminated mil dot reticule ( a very cheap one at that ), floated the forearm with fiberglass for added weight ( to reduce what little muzzle jump there was :D ) and to allow a threaded forearm pistol grip and a swivel stud for attachment of the bipod. With these modifications, I am able to put 8 of the 10 rounds from a clip in the 10 ring at 50 yards just about as fast as I can pull the trigger AND SEE EACH HOLE FORM IN THE TARGET... barrel dont rise even a 1/16th of an inch. The last two rounds will usually be in the 9 or 8 ring... wich I think is pretty darn good. I have shot the 9mm carbine out to 100 yards, and groups while not as impressive as the 50 yard groups and not allowing as fast as follow up shots, still impress the local shooters down at the range.
I have emailed the folks over at hi-point in regards to high capacity magazine manufacturing for this gun, or any other possibilities from other manufacturers... to no answer what so ever :(. A shame since this thing is starved for ammo and 10 round mags just dont cut it. BTW, this thing just loves to eat up ammo... trigger pull is crisp but staged for firing in beginning of trigger pull rather then at the end... I can ( after 6k rounds ) empty a 10 round clip in under 3 seconds according to my buddies stop watch.
Cleaning of the carbine could have been easier, but still all in all not a hard process. Two bolts remove the sheet metal cover allowing access to the heart of the carbine... the removal of the slide action is another story
All in all, a great carbine with sooooo much more potential then it has bone stock... weight the forearm, bipod, muzzlebreak it, and a good scope improves it significantly, to the point of most range go'ers that see it and its performance usually say " THATS a hi-point carbine??? I saw them for like $200 and passed on it thinking it was a cheap gun not capable of what I am seing today " and that I have heard too many times to count
