First I must say that I like the 5.45x39 because it has almost zero recoil.

I really perfer the 5.56 because of it's energy. When I first had the oppertunity to pick up a 84s, it was like night and day how the round reactted in the rifle. It really works the action. Seems like the 7.62x39 goes boooom and the 5.56 goes BANG. It has been said that the 5.56 is best used within 100-150yds compared to the 7.62x39 which is more effective beyond out to 300yds(Thunder Ranch in a back issue of SOF).

We all know the 7.62x51 is the best for distance and for accuracy and that the M1a/M14 is the rifle to beat for a semiauto beyond 500yds.

I personally would use the 5.56 over the 5.45 for use in sub guns for NATO reasons, meaning plenty of ammo available, I would think twice if 5.45 was as available. I would also use the 5.56 for serious accuracy within 500 yds, on light clothing :D using an AK heavy barrelled custom action for now atleast until I can compare the 5.56 with 7.62x39 rounds side by side on a custom barreled action at this distance on accuracy.

BUT!! The 6ppc Russian benchrest round, 7.62 necked down to a 6mm is very impressive for accuracy....overall....I'm not sure which would be more effective out to 500yds...5.56, 7.62x39 or the 6ppc. I'm sure they all have a purpose:)

Weird place for this thread in the mk fund.Three forks is loaded with coyotes go hit them with both as a test.I've hit them with 22=250s to 17 rem and spun them hard ,but nothing makes up for bullet weight.A coyote is much smaller than a human, bullet speed is good but weight is energy, compare the 9 to a 45 caliber.Good old sks and johnny stewart.Oh say hi to the rock chucks at Toston gravel pit for me,couple years back they had to take on a 308,they should be repopulated by now

Which ammo you use depends on what you would use it for. The 5.45 and the 5.56 both do more damage because the smaller the cartidges at higher velocities do more damage than larger cartridges at lower velocities. I saw a gallon jug of water hit by 7.62 and 5.45 and the 5.45 pretty much exploded the jug while the 7.62 put more of hole in the jug of water.

In my opinion the rifle and the shooter are the much bigger factors when it comes to accuracy than the kind of ammo used. I use the 7.62X39 simply because I have a Russian AK-47.
