At a local gun shop they have the VEPR K (no muzzle brake) for $569.99 or the SAR 1 for $339.99. Which should a person buy? I realize that it may not be a fair question since most would rate the VEPR K to be a better model. However, I have been reading about the VEPR line and they can have problems, i.e., front sight canting. Is the extra $239.00 worth it for the VEPR K?

If you want a nice shooter, the SAR 1 is hard to beat for value. If you might be collecting AK's then a Russian model is a must have so get the VEPR, its a step up. I would start with one of those and pick up a less expensive SAR 1 later.

Think of it as a watch. A Timex is inexpensive and will do the job well. A Swiss watch is a higher quality item that you can be proud of but it costs more. I like buying the best, I never ever feel like I did the wrong thing later. I'm always satisfied. If your not, then the VEPR will sell faster than an SAR 1.

Hope this helps.
