I just bought an egyptian maadi. It has the pistol grip. How do I know that this is legal? Is there a serial number I can check?

Check your local gunshops and gunshows. There's a new publication out now called the Preban/Postban bible. It's a thick book of serial numbers for different manufacture and styles of firearms, showing cut-off points where the serial number is considered postban and so on. I've seen them with the rules for rifles as well and the loopholes you can exploit to give your postban the maximum features you want and still be BATF legal. I don't know who is publishing it, but it looked pretty low-end, so I'm assuming it's a really small-time operation.

I thought that as long as the gun came with them, it was ok.

IT IS NOT SAFE TO ASSUME ANYTHING WHEN IT COMES TO PRE-BAN vs. POST-BAN. WHILE THE EXCUSE THAT THE RIFLE CAME LIKE THAT FROM A LICENSED FFL DEALER MAY SAVE YOU FROM JAIL TIME, IT WILL NOT PREVENT CONFISCATION OF THE RIFLE AND ALL SORTS OF OTHER LEGAL HEADACHES, NOT TO MENTION ATTORNEY'S FEES. GOOD LUCK SORTING OUT THE HISTORY OF YOUR MAADI. ALBERT.

If it was imported by Intrac of Knox,TN it post ban. The year of import is marked on the rear sight block. If it is post ban unless it has a usa made parts kit pistol grip is illegal.
