(Wednesday, August 25, 1999) -- Your immediate action is needed!
Kentucky Representative, Harold Rogers, can throw a huge roadblock
in the way of the FBI's ability to register gun owners.
Representative Rogers (R-KY) is the committee head of the
appropriations subcommittee that funds the federal Justice
Department, including the FBI.
There are two different bills that fund the FBI. The Senate version
(S. 1217) contains a provision that instructs the FBI to
"immediately" destroy the names of gun owners that are obtained from
instant background checks. The FBI must do this or else they lose
valuable funding.
The House version (H.R. 2670) does not contain this mandate for the
FBI to "immediately" destroy gun owners' names. The "immediately"
language is absolutely crucial as the FBI has admitted it is keeping
gun owners names for 90 days-- and even then, no one can be
completely sure the agency is not keeping the names indefinitely.
There are already more than three million Americans that are now in
FBI's files as a result of the Brady instant check. While this
pernicious law must be repealed, it is imperative that in the
interim, Congress act to cut-off this Brady abuse.
This is where Chairman Rogers can make a huge difference. He must
insist that his fellow legislators adopt the Senate language
ordering the FBI to immediately destroy gun owners' names.
ACTION: Please contact Representative Rogers and ask him to insist
on the Senate language in S. 1217. Ask him to urge his fellow
legislators to keep the language that orders the FBI to
"immediately" destroy gun owners' names. You can reach

------ pre-written message ------
Dear Representative Rogers:
The FBI is now using the Brady Instant Check to keep gun owners'
names for 90 days. It is incredible to me that they even need these
names for 90 seconds! Allowing the FBI to keep these records for so
long only increases the chances that they will keep them
indefinitely.
That is why passing the Senate language in S. 1217 which orders the
FBI to "immediately" destroy gun owners' names is so important.
Unfortunately, the House bill does not contain this language.
Please use your leadership position to make sure that the
Appropriations Committee members adopt the Senate language on this
particular point. It is imperative that the FBI "immediately"
destroy gun owners' names. Thank you.
Sincerely,
