Well I about cackled when I heard this. At the top of the hour on FOX News right before Hannity and Colmes there was a news spot that said Bush Jr. just put out his official stance on gun laws. Here they are:
1. Minimum age for owning a firearm should be 21. Already is for purchasing pistols. (Of course you can kill and get killed for your country at 18 or younger if you lie with a wink to the recruiter)
2. Background checks on all firearms purchases.
3. For restricting private citizens from owning high capacity magazines.

Well I can't wait to post this on AR15.com where there are still tons of people who believe that the Republicans are going to ride in on white horses and save the world. The only Republican candidates who have any principles at all and the will to stand behind them are Alan Keyes (brilliant man!) and Pat Buchanan (a little protectionist but at least he's concerned about America's economic future), both of which have a snowball's chance in Hell of getting the nomination. VOTE LIBERTARIAN!

Well, maybe not all is lost. Being the political animal that I am (out of necessity of my love of weapons) I've been following the Republican primary.

I think Keyes stands a better-than-average chance of getting the vice-presidential nomination. He's black, he's conservative, he doesn't have a lot of baggage, he's well-thought-of in right-wing circles. While he doesn't have the clout of a president, he does have influence.

And for God's sake, lets not shoot ourselves in the foot again and elect a democrate with 40% of the vote. Bush is no friend of ours, but he's not our worst nightmare, either.

Besides, it's beginning to look like we may be getting some relief out of the Supreme Court. Check out www.nraila.org (http://www.nraila.org) for more on that.

But like the man said, buy up while you can. I, like all of you, are hoping and working for the best, and getting ready for the worst.

Once again,it's time to vote for the lesser
of two evils. Just like every other election.
I've been a libertarian since George Sr got
elected.But if a libertarian can't get a vote
in the electorial college how can he get in
the White house even if he gets the majority
vote?

THE ONLY THING WORSE THAN A GUN BANNING DEMOCRAT IS A GUN BANNING REPUBLICAN! I think these verses from El Numero Uno put it well:
"Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravening wolves.
Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit."

A Personal Political Analysis

Hello. After reviewing this discussion thread and listening to what George Bush Jr said, I may have a reason why he said it. Right now, Mr. Bush's staff is handling his campaign. Some of their efforts are pre-emptive, designed to deflate his opposition before they can make an issue out of something he may be against but is a political hot-potato at the moment. One of the issues is gun-control. We know the radical efforts of the Democratic hopefulls, but we also have Dole espousing much stricter gun-control and needlessly restrictive measures at that. Let's be painfully honest, putting all political correctness aside, she has a snowball's chance in hell to get the Republican nomination, however, she can cause problems for George in the press, unless he can pre-empt her efforts by stealing her thunder or 'me too' politics. In doing so, he keeps her from pushing the issue and making it a one-issue vote that would cause problems for George Bush Jr. He also cuts his opposition off at the knees by 'supporting sensible gun-control.' In reality though, we know politicians say and promise a lot during campaigns they have no intention of supporting in actuality. We see them promising jobs during stops in poor urban areas, more police in high-crime areas, protection for jobs in one-industry towns, more health care for the elderly when stopping for polstering at retirement communities. It's an old pattern, but let's look at Bush Jr's actual gun-control efforts as Govenor of Texas. First, if I'm not mistaken, he signed into law the state's CCW law in addition to the prevention of lawsuits against gun-makers in Texas. So by his actions we know he's pro-gun rights. Remember, this man is going to be in for what may be one of the nastiest Presidential races ever. Gore has no personality, so he will attack anyone personally who does. Dole doesn't have the money or political machine working for her, so she's going to try to latch onto one issue and milk it for political points... unless George Bush Jr can break the political gears by throwing in a 'me too' to knock it out as an issue. If I'm not mistaken, Bush was also addressing a borderline conservative-liberal group when he made the gun-control statements. You can expect him to say he'll push for legislation to close the gunshow-loophole. Now off-hand, this sounds dour and bad indeed, until you look at states where gunshows are required by state law to perform background checks, like Georgia. All dealer-to-buyer sales must go through a background check and we have some nice shows here with that. Private sales are still private and let's be honest, if I decide to sell my pistol to John Q. Public, there's no way the government can keep track of that sort of sale. Screw them. As for the banning of high-capacity magazines, I'm almost certain he was referring to the importation of high-capacity foreign made magazines, not banning citizens from owning currently-lawful preban mags. I don't agree with making firearm's ownership from 18 to 21-years of age. There are some that will argue that firearms' intrinsicly hazardous nature should only be in the hands of mature, responsible people. What rational person can argue with that? The decision needs to be made then universally as to what is the legal age of maturity and consentual responsibility? If you have to be 21 to buy a beer, buy a rifle, then let's make 21 universal in the other direction as well. You must be 21 to join the military, you must be 21 to be drafted under Selective Service, you must be 21 to vote, you must be 21 before youre prosecuted under general law rather than juvenile law... You see how ridiculous this can get. Bottom line, expect tokenism from George Bush Jr on the topic of gun-control when questioned by the press. His history shows he is pro-firearm, so once he's in, expect either minor gun-control to be signed into law if Democrats win control of Congress, or expect no gun-control at all to go through if the Republicans hold onto at least one house of Congress. The Democrats realize they are looking at losing the White House and if the Republicans keep Congress, you can expect screams of agony from the liberals as their sacred cows are taken out for legislative slaughter.

TinMan--interesting post.

BTW, I notice that the Democratic National Committee as well as the usual bunch of anti-gun zealots are now complaining that Bush Jr. is "fanatically pro-gun" and "in the pocket of the NRA." I guess he's got everybody mad at him.

I trust Bush Jr. about as far as I can throw him. He was the governor of Texas! Of course he's going to sign a CCW law. There was probably such an overwhelming vote on the bill that he couldn't have vetoed even if he wanted to (which I don't think he would have). The biggest problem is that of character, this guy is a weathervane, he just says what the public wants to hear so that he can get elected. If the media makes another big push for gun control down the road, which they will, Bush will fold in a second. I want a politician thats got some spine and a set of balls to match. Bush has neither, it really showed with the way he handled the cocaine thing(which I could care less about). He pulled a pure Clinton on that one, which leads me to believe he doesn't have the character to take flak for his past or to stand for what he truly "believes". The only way I will vote Republican, is if Keyes gets the vice presidential nomination. I know the VP doesn't do squat, but this might give Keyes a shot at the presidency down the road. My biggest problem with the Republicans is that after the 96', they KNEW that the gun vote can literally win elections for them, less than four years later they have already turned their backs on us. At least I know what to expect from the Democrats, they want to screw me til my eyes pop out. This country has gotten so fat dumb and happy that there is no honor left, I'm not going to vote for another Benedict Arnold! That means I'm voting Libertarian, other gun voters may just stay home. If that means the Republicans lose, so be it, maybe Amerika has to learn the hard way and live through four more years of Democratic tyranical absurdity. At that point the Republicans might just pull their heads out of their asses, after they lost yet another election because of third party split voters and start to practice what they preach. Or maybe the Democrats will have made it so bad that Americans will be backed up against a wall and fight for the republic, for which it stands, one nation under God, with liberty and justice for all.

I let him know that if he persists on talking about guns control then he risks millions of gun owners not voting for him.

Hello. Well the only thing I can suggest is writing Mr. Bush's campaign and letting them know your disfavor with his recent statements. Email can be send from his website www.georgebush.com. (http://www.georgebush.com.) I went ahead and sent a brief note of my concern for his recent pro gun-control statements. You can make a difference if enough people write to express their dislike of his recent statements. Make a difference and take fifteen minutes to write his campaign.

George W. is a sell out, a crook and I don't want him for President. But I don't want Gore even more. Voting Libertarian is a GUARANTEE that Gore will win, just like voting for Perot saved Klinton's ass two separate times.

Vote Libertarian and you'll get President Al Gore and if you liked Gun Control under the Rapist-in-Chief (Komrade Klinton) you're going to LOVE the sweeping gun bans Al Gore will attempt to implement!

As for me, I'm going to hold my nose and vote for crooked sell-out George W. Bush.

Freedom is not free and if the price we have to pay for it this time around is to elect a New World Order sell-out, that's the stinking breaks!

Vote libertarian and feel good about yourself while Gore takes the Oath of Office. Get real people, this fight is down to two men, Gore and Bush Jr. Voting for a third party is essentially a vote for Gore, since third party candidates have almost no chance at all and plays into the hands of the Democrats. Conservative third party candidates are fine and dandy, were the stakes not so high this time around. We need to break up the Clinton-Gore legacy, the only way this can happen is to back the man that has the chance of defeating Gore and leads him already in the polls. You can have your principles but now is the time to vote for reality, and the cold fact is we are all screwed if Gore wins, we might be inconvenienced by Bush Jr., but we are totally hosed and can look forward to four more years of even more off-the-wall gun-control and environmental insanity. How do any of you like the prospect of spending $4-$5 for a gallon of gas. Gore wants this. How do you like the idea of losing your job because the factory youre working in can't afford waste disposal fees or emits too much smoke or pollutants? Gore wants this. How'd you like that nice piece of land you bought to build your home on confiscated by the government for pennies on the dollar because some stinking endangered bird or insect was found on your land? Gore wants this. And Gore wants gun-registration. We all know what that is the pre-cursor for. For the love of Heaven, focus on the goals we must achieve and honestly, voting third party will only go in Gore's favor. Vote for Bush or wait for the knock on the door that will come one day soon after Gore gets sworn in.

well. I think once bush gets in the W.H.
we can't sit back thinking were safe from
the liberal freedom snatchers either. I believe
that's the time were really going to have to get busy on the offensive, getting rid of gun

This is from his website

Gun Laws:

Supports requiring instant background checks at gun shows
by allowing gun show promoters to access the instant check
system on behalf of vendors

Supports the current ban on automatic weapons

Supports voluntary safety locks

Supports automatic detention for kids who commit crimes with guns

Supports stronger enforcement of existing gun laws, would
provide more funding for aggressive gun law enforcement
programs such as Project Exile in Richmond, Virginia

Opposes government mandated registration of all guns
owned by law abiding citizens

( Given the likely alternatives , I can live with this guy as Pres.)
