who knows anything about a preban PWA ar15? do they have chrome lined barrels (or how do i tell if it does?). the chrome on the bolt on mine is baked off in spots, is this a thing that will damage the rifle? or is it okay to shoot with out the chrome on there (there are still spots on it, most is gone)?
is it expensive to get things like that re chromed?

PWA didn't make complete rifles - only lowers, so there's no way to tell by model or date - just depends what upper the person who sold it to you put on there.
AR bolts are not chromed unless you buy them that way aftermarket - same goes for the bolt carrier.
Make sure the rifle's clean and look in the chamber - it should be evident that it's a chromed chamber if it's bright and shiny and silver. Look down the muzzle for a ring of silver coming out of the muzzle - that will let you know if the bore is chrome lined or not. You might have to remove the flash suppressor to get a good look at it.
Chrome won't flake off like you describe on a bolt, unless it was a do-it-yourself chroming job where the owner took the bolt down to an auto body shop and had it chrome plated like a bumper (which is not the correct deposition method for use in firearms).
If your bolt really was chromed that way, the little bits of flaking chrome are definitely not good for your rifle - but how bad they are I couldn't say. If it were me, I'd strip off the chrome or just buy a new bolt.
A chrome bolt is unusual and unnecessary, but if you've got to have it, buy a properly chromed bolt from DPMS - it'll cost less than having the old one stripped and properly rechromed.

the only chromed part is the back of the bolt that goes like a cone toward the end. i had a gunsmith look at it today, he didnt say it was unusual, just said it had baked off, and not to worry about it. he said they do that sometimes.
thanks, , although i am still a little confused
