View Full Version : Poly-Techs at the SHOT show
Hello.
I saw and was talking with Poly-Tech today at the SHOT Show here in Vegas.
They are Pre-Ban guns that have been ruined to be legal.
They had nice drag type stocks on them and their muzzles nuts were welded on.
Nice guns, OUT

I bet they were a lot less than 700 bucks. The importers are sitting on thousands of Mak 90's that they paid less than 200 dollars each.
Steel Core,
stop teasing me man.
Just kidding, those two old fags were meant for eachother.
Take care, OUT in Vegas!

These are not new imports, but leftover stuff frm the late 80s in the case of the Polys, and 90s in the case of the MAK90s, that have been scrounged.. There are no more imports frm China since 94, or 93. The Polys are xlnt post ban, made out of pre-ban guns, that I can t rec. highly enough. They don t cost much more than the SARs, or the MAADI.MISRs, but the quality is farrrrrrr superior to both of these rifles, w. the best trigger of any gun in the AK series I ve seen including the Bulg or the Hung AKs. They only have fifty or so , and this is it. I have two of them one for shooting , and one for looking at! They used to come w. the blnd wood like the Hung. but now they come in blk choate type stks. Its now or never if u want one, call Kengs in GA. Atlanta I think, if u can get an ffl to get it for u. These, like the Yugo rifles, will fade into history rather quickly. There are still Bul,Hun, Egy. and Rom types, and even some nice Polish kits, but no Chin Polys, or Yugos anywhere to be seen.
I talked to Kengs today at the Vegas gun show.
They were selling their Poly-Techs with Choate stocks for $485.00 at the show.
They have 2000 of them to sell and that's all.
Take care, OUT in Vegas!

2000 of them,WOW! Guess I have to get one of these puppys. Since there so praised for being better made than the Norinco`s. They can take all ak mags right?

Yes, they do. These Polytech's are cream of the crop IMHO. They are beautifully well made machines. I'll NEVER part with mine. If your looking for an AK and can afford this price range, you would be insane not to get one of these. The US parts AK's don't even compare (no offense to you US AK owners).
Yes I was talking to Sam V.
The guns were nice. They even looked good with the drag stock on them.
They also had a Pre-Ban Poly-Tech AK-47/S Legend that was a factory cutaway on display and it was for sell for $1500.00!
Take care, OUT in Vegas!

Sam is friendly and he is a top notch salesman. I have watched him work at the shows and concluded that he would be a good lawyer, poker player or used car salesman. He has lots of ak goodies at his personal tables
and doesn't mind people coonfingering his Krink. He was asking 700 for the rifles before Christmas.I bet he has more than 2000 Poly Tech Mak 90 rifles stashed somewhere. ;-}

Does anyone have a photo of what these look like? Any additional info?
I'm guessing they have the thumbhold stock, but what is a "drag" stock?
Sorry for the questions (dumb) but I'm trying to learn.

Here is a picture of the one I bought last year, the picture isn't real good but you get the idea.

A "Drag" stock is just refering to a Dragunov style thumbhole stock, the ones on the Polytechs (Choate brand) are referred to as being one of the most comfortable thumbholes on the market.
Another question (s)?
Are these rifles made with the heavy Chinese barrels?
How much work to put that pinned folder on from Ace?
Are the barrels chromed?
I understand the Poly's have a extra nice finish, is it just a very nice bluing?
I'm going to call Kengs this week I think. It'll give me a pre ban rifle without the bayo mount for half price. Seems like a nice deal.
PS Can I put the nice wood stocks back on them, or is that a 922 violation? I'd like to make it look more original?

First, yes it does have the heavy chromed Chinese barrel with the very tiny fins going down the lenght of the barrel. The picture above is an old photo. I currently have the ACE stock set on it. I like very well, couldn't be happier with it. It is also very easy to install, just loosen the screws, slide out the thumbhole, and slide in the ACE. Then the grip just bolts right up to the existing holes.
The fit and finish on these rifles is great. They have a very good bluing job on them. There are no blemishes in the bluing on mine.
To put the original wood back on you would have to meet the US parts count by way of another means than stocks. You would probably end up having to use US followers and floor plates in your mags to remain legal. Someone else here should be able to answer that better for you than me.

I was reading the above post's and agree that the price on these Poly's is real good considering quality and availability. I will add though that not all U.S. parts guns are of the shabby league. I had been working at gun shops for years until my recent move up to Syracuse NY. I, like many others, sold off my pre ban stuff when financial times got tough for me. I had the itch last year and started ordering in guns at the shop I worked for. Every time one came in, I was dissapointed and would place it on the rack for sale. I did this until I hit one that not only was far better than the prior American parts method AK's but better in my opinion than any AK that I ever have held (sans the GALIL and VALMET). I first started by ordering in the new high cap Egyption Maddi: was rough in every aspect, finish, assembly, and just looked used and abused. The wood was downright awful (worst wood stock set I'd ever seen). Next came the high cap Romanian SAR-1: was better finished than the Maadi but still was a bit crude in my opinion. The wood stocks were not matching using orange and brown and poor finish (I'm a wood refinisher by trade). The next gun was the Ohio Ordnance/Intrac Romanian AK's: This was pretty much the same quality as the SAR-1 but using a synthetic Bulgarian AKM stock set. It did make the package look better but was not a big enough improvement to warrant paying about $600 bucks. Not a bad looking gun but no where near my standard. I finally get the gun I chose to buy, the Bulgarian SSR99 offered thru Arsenal USA: I open the box and the first thing that I notice is how nice the parkerizing is (not flat black paint, real parkerizing). It has the same color and consistancy as the barrel of my Bushmaster AR's barrel. The stocks were a serious black color that matched perfectly. the receiver of a high quality milling (not stamped). A threaded slant muzzle brake (welded on with just a dab of weld for legalities) that was nicely done with the spot of weld being parkerized right over. Chrome lined chamber, bore, and piston. Looked inside and the machining spoke quality. The gun is sent with two recoil buffers that don't need to be used but are a nice feature. Smooth working action. Decent trigger pull. The whole thing just spoke quality to me. I was so exited, up to that point the post ban specimens I had seen were just shabby renditions of pre bans (not doing the pre bans any justice at all). I am a quality fanatic and can tell you's that if you have not handled or seen one of these up close, then you are in for a surprize when you do. The parts are only half of the quality story, the final assembly and finish is what really makes this gun top notch. Lets face it, you can have decent parts but have Gomer assembling them just won't cut it. Not the case with these guns. The sad thing is that because of industry competition and business politics, the SSR's will probably never be made again. The total numbers will most likely not exceed 600 manufactured. The Arsenal USA company has plans for some other guns as well as AK's. For the AK lover the SSR is a must check out http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/smile.gif
