Hi all. Just orderd a mosin 91/30 and I was just looking for some input since a lot of you guys have them.
How many of you keep them original and how many put modern stocks , scopes, bipods, etc. on them?
I was thinking of modern stuff for mine.

They're so inexpensive why not get 2, one to keep original and customize the other. Here is a pic of one of my Mosins that I customized into a hunting rifle many years ago. Still have the rifle and have used it bring down a few northern whitetails.

Nice looking rifle, I saw a polymer stock that I liked, and brownells has a scope mount for weaver style scopes,so I figured they are so cheap that I wouldn't be ruining it's value to dress it up a little. Thanks for the input.

well you asked........I would keep it original, I have 3 and all are in original configurations, no aftermarket stuff, no bubba-zing, etc...
now if for some reason you would want to put a scope on it, I would sugguest getting one of those "darell" scout scope mounts, that goes in place of the rear sight. this way you aren't drilling holes in the receiver.......and later when you want to have it back in original configuration, it's a matter of taking off the mount and putting the rear sight back on.

remember you asked for this.........keep it the way it is,if you feel the need to do something, put a scout mount on it for a scope so as to not have to drill or cut anything also,if you want a deer rifle, why not buy a deer rifle?the mosin are a piece of history and yes there are alot of them, remember when there were alot of SKS's?now they go from 200 and up.

and keep 2 as is and play with the other.

I have an MN 91/30 sniper that the stock disintegrated on. I would like to get a wood stock for it but rather than get a junker to take the stock from, does anyone make NEW wood stocks for 91/30s? It would of course have to be cute to acommodate the scope.

Sporterizing a low buck Mosin is no crime. There are millions of 'em. It is fun to make your own hunting rifle.
What I like to do with Arisakas is buy already "Bubba'd" ones and then do a better job improving on them. I would never cut up an original military Arisaka.
Nice job on the Mosin pictured in this thread
Don't feel too guilty for destroying a piece of history ! :D

Dragunov1,
SG has some wood sporter stocks for the mosin for about $60 & CTD has polymer for about the same.
But if you want original we could work out something on one of mine,if you are interested.

There are some that are run-of-the-mill and there are some real collectors out there. Make sure you are desecrating something that is worthless. My first MN taught me the rigors of maintenence when using corrosive ammo. The one in the picture was a M-1891 that was fired several times and retired to the closet for a few weeks. When I got around to cleaning it the bore was ruined. It is practically a smooth bore now but still functions safely. I was bored one day and cut down the barrel, threaded it and permanently installed (pinned and welded) a CAR-15 flash hider so the barrel is 16.25". I inletted the barreled action into the modified M-44 stock and have something that is out of the ordinary and makes about a 2 foot diameter flame ball when fired. I regret not cleaning this as it was a Finnish capture that had some odd features that are very desireable today.

I'll be sure to only desecrate the lesser value gun, the other two are more expensive and have all the markings and stuff intact. They are rated in excellant condition so I won't touch those except to clean them and put them away.

Well guys, I just didn't have the heart to do it.
my mosins came and the one that should have been the beater that I was going to redo turned out to be a westinghouse 91 dated 1915 with the hex reciever, heavy barrel,
and in great condition.(also the others were in much to good shape to butcher and one had a sniper bolt handle (bent)the sporter stock I ordered turned out to be crappy) sooo, I'm just going to make one of the other two into a 91/30 sniper using the russian pattern scope mount and original stock .
History can breath a little easier.:D
