Where the gas piston connects to the bolt carrier, is there supposed to be "play" in it? Does not move back and forth, but does move slightly side to side. Is this normal?

That's normal for about every AK out there. It won't go anywhere. It's screwed in and then pinned. You have to look real close to see the pin job.
