Hi,

A friend of mine recently had an incident with his 870 Magnum where his barrel exploded while firing a slug round. I believe the explosion took place from the side of the barrel about six inches from the chamber and blew out the side, taking off one of his fingers. He had just fired it two times, attempting to sight in his hunting optics, without any problems. Apparently, there were two pieces of the sabot still lodged in the barrel after the explosion. I was curious to know if anyone had experienced this or heard of this happening before and what might have caused it. I may have some of my terminology wrong here because I'm not a shotgun aficionado and I've just used what he described to me. My impression from what he said was that there might have been obstructions from the second shot (just before the third, exploding round) that caused back-pressure.

Any thoughts?

Thanks, this guy could really use some sort of explanation.
