SARASOTA -- A federal judge sentenced former Sarasota police Officer Alberto Gutierrez to house arrest and probation Tuesday for interfering with an FBI investigation. Gutierrez, 27, was investigated by the FBI last year after Michelle Goetz, 31, told agents Gutierrez gave her crack cocaine in exchange for sex. Goetz was one of three women who complained about Gutierrez' sexual misconduct while he was on the job. She had met him when she reported her car stolen, and their relationship lasted about six months. To prove her story, she gave agents a blue blouse that had his semen on it, DNA tests showed. While a federal grand jury was meeting to hear the evidence against him, Gutierrez was offering her gifts and trips if she would keep quiet. And the FBI was listening in on their conversations, with her permission. "Just out of curiosity, what would happen if the shirt disappeared?" he asked her in a Feb. 13, 2001, conversation. A few months later, as she prepared to testify before the grand jury, he told her: "If this all goes my way, I owe you the world. You will never want for anything. … Give me one chance." He was arrested in April on charges of drug distribution and witness tampering. In exchange for his guilty plea, the U.S. attorney's office dropped the drug charge. Gutierrez served 95 days in jail before he was released on bail. At Tuesday's federal court hearing in Tampa, Gutierrez asked for no more jail time and promised District Court Judge Steven Merryday that he had changed.
