Reciever Types:

Stamped - These recievers are used in the AKM and AK-74 series of arms. The reciever is produced of stamped sheet metal which is bent into shape and has a front and rear trunion used to hold the stock and the barrel assembly.

Milled - These recievers were the original type used for manufacture of the AK-47. Milled from a 4 lb block of steel, they turned out as a solid reciever. There are no rivets in these weapons.

Manufacturers:

Poly Technologies - These recievers were both in Stamped and Milled form. Polytech produced the Legend series of arms. Pre ban AKs with milled recievers. These weapons were designated AK-47/S. They produced stamped reciever weapons which went with the stamping AKS-762.

Norinco - These recievers were made by the Northern Industries Corporation. Contrary to popular belief, these weapons were heat treated perfectly and both PolyTech and Norinco weapons will last a LONG time. Norinco manufactured also both milled and stamped recievers. Their stamped reciever weapons went by a number of different designations, a common one being AKM 47/S. All milled norinco's I've seen have been post ban MAK-91 guns.

B-West - BWest imported weapons as well as manufactured weapons from parts kits. Their imported weapons are perfectly made as they're Norinco or other chinese arsenal weapons. Their recievers are ones to avoid. They didn't heat treat the guide rails in the reciever, causing much deformation after as little as 2000 rounds. Be sure you're looking at a B-West import and not B-West manufactured gun before you buy.

Hey Ktemplar! I suggest you edit your post and remove that serial number. If you ever notice people put a serial number up with some x's. Well this is to prevent people from knowing the serial number to their weapon, which could lead to all sorts of bad things (eg. bogus report on stolen rifle). Just trying to keep you from learning a potentially nasty lesson. Take care.

The first pattern Kalashnikov rifles (1948-51) were of the stamped receiver type. The second series (1951-54) had a receiver machined from a forged-steel billet. The third model (1954- ) went back to the stamped receiver design.

Florgy is correct. The first model was of stamped make, but due to welding technology of the time in Russia, didn't work out at all. They chose to go to a machined reciever and once a new stamped reciever had been designed with reenforcements it was fielded as the 3rd AK, model 1959, Also known as the AKM

China Sport,

Can you tell me how to identify if a post ban AK is B West imported or B West manufactured? I have purchased a Norinco BWK-92 (with thumbhole stock) in .223 over the internet. Is this B West imported or B West manufactured?
