i've just been wondering something here and maybe you guys could help me out:

last year we were having fun plugging away at some targets. we have some of those 2-way portable radios and my wife was indoors watching movies while my friends and I were shooting. our friend Bob brought out his M1 carbine and then we plugged away at some targets.

my wife comes over the radio and says "what the hell was that? i could hear it clearly a half mile away indoors!" the M1 was REALLY REALLY loud. not that any other person would care out in the boonies, but the noise of it means that if you're hunting you're gonna get one shot off and then everything is going to scatter.

our AK is "quiet" enough to hunt with and i find that it doesn't bother game that much more than a .22 Win Mag. the Nagant M44 is another deal however. everything hauls ass very fast in every direction when we fire it. if you miss it then that's it for the day because whatever you're running at is going to be in the next county by the time you cycle another round and get a bead on it.

so how loud is the Romak III/PSL if used for hunting. is it an ear-splitting explosion that sends everything running really fast, or is it only a little louder than an AK? we plan to use the Romak III/PSL for varminting. yeah i know it's overkill but i'm an overkill kind of guy.

thanks!

Yes, these rifles are very loud. It's partly because of the type of muzzle brake that comes on them.
I have changed the brake on mine and it is much quieter now.
The original sends everything straight out to the sides in front of you. My new brake has smaller holes but has a lot more of them, and they are slanted forward slightly.
Also the ID of the new brake is much larger and sends more sound downrange instead of blasting in your face.
I'm sure that it's still quite loud downrange, but it's now much more tolerable to the shooter(me).

ok, thanks! also do you have pics or info on the brake you have for yours now?

i figure that with an 8x scope, i don't have to worry too much about noise, but groundhogs lay low for about a WEEK after i fire anything big. i swear they see me coming around the corner a mile away and they get ready to flee. the Nagant would be great but i can't hit the broad side of a barn with it. Romak III should give better results.

thanks!

The one I use is similar to the ones they sell at dragunovparts.com and is about 4 inches long.
I don't have a pic at this time. But there is a pic of one from dragunovparts in the photo gallery of this group.
