SSG-97/7.62x54R for deer?

Can this rifle be effectively utilized for hunting Blacktail Deer, or is it just plain to weak?

You want to hunt with 54r? Its the standard hunting round in the Russian Federation!

Set up your scope, range your Deer out to 100 yards, personally I would not go out to much further. Reason is this rifle does have a tendancy to string a shot. Use good ammo and put three rounds in the mag and you should do fine. Get some soft point 54r.

Any deer hit behind the shoulder in the sweet spot is dead in its tracks, with the Russian 30.06 equivalent (54r).

I dunno bout Mulie, but our Blacktail season starts in Oct or Nov, whenever the Wildlife Honchos have finished getting their freezers full.:(
It lasts about 30 days.

If it will do to a Deer what it does to a Groundhog, I think you'll be just fine:)
I used my M44 with Barnul SP to rid my Pine trees of blackbirds. Normally, I don't kill ANYTHING, but there were hundreds of them and they made quite a nucance of themselves, so it was open season! A direct hit at 50-75 yds nearly ripped them in half. I managed to get one in flight... remember the scene in top gun when the Mig gets hit with the missile? It was kinda like that.
