Sorry if this ? has been asked before, but is a Norinco NHM91 considered to be a chinese RPK? It has a heavy, long barrel, bipod, and a heavy stamped receiver(like all chinese aks). Why not? Seems to me that it would fit right in with the other rpks. I do know that a true rpk receiver is like that of a VEPR, but the chinese receiver is definitely thicker than the euro stamped receivers. What are your opinions on the subject? Thanks

Technically you can consider it a post ban RPK type because, as you state, it meets the criteria for an RPK. The thumb-hole stock was George Bush Sr.'s way of making it politically correct.

The Chinese NHM-91 receiver is heavy duty. Thicker sheetmetal receiver and the barrel trunnion is beefier.
This is a chinese NHM-91 donor receiver.

Guys,
Two questions:
How do you get the muzzle cap off to replace it with a muzzle break?
Also, will standard RPK furniture fit on an NHM91 w/o much work?
Thanks!
(Waiting on another paycheck so I can pay off my layaway NHM)

First and foremost: Thanks for the responses! Those are some sweet looking NHM 91s. Looks like I need to get a russian rpk furniture set for mine.
To remove the muzzle nut, just use a punch and knock out the forward most front site block retaining pin(the one closest to the muzzle cap, this pin holds the plunger in the fsb). Once you do this you should be able to get a screw driver or some other small, flat metal object under the plunger to lift it up and unsrew the muzzle cap w/ a wrench. Just remember to unscrew in the right direction so you are not tightening it further. You should have a nice set of threads on that muzzle. Then screw on you favorite muzzle accessory and you're set. If you want to permanently attach your muzzle device then you will have to put the plunger back in the front site base, screw on the muzzle device to where you want it, put the plunger back in place so it is resting on top of the notch in the muzzle device, and knock the fsb retaining pin back in.
From what I've read in other posts, putting rpk furniture on your NHM will take some time with the sandpaper, but that is part of the fun of it. Good luck and feel free to email if you have further ?s

Welcome to the group, IronHorn !!! :welcome:
I see you figured out how to use the search feature, congrats. Many long timers can't figure that out. If you are into Norincos, check the Norinco forum for a ton of interesting stuff. Feel free to ask any questions and offer your own knowledge.

I just got a Chinese "RPK" (Norinco NHM-91) at the gun show here last weekend. The wood is perfect, orange tinted laminate, front H/G's are worn a bit, adds to the look. The rifle overall is 95%, blueing is very good to excellent. When I bought it the bore and whole inside of receiver was filthy, long term sitting. I did a complete cleaning and found a beautiful bore, bolt face looks almost new. The story was only about 500 rounds were through it before being put away for years. It came with original 30rd Norinco mag (lots of wear), and a still grease covered 75 round Norinco drum. Also has the birdcage style brake, original sling, Euro style RPK brake.
What would the value of this be? I am asking before I state the price I paid, just in case I got hosed (Hope not). I guess it doesn't really matter, it is what I wanted, even though I almost picked up a Vector Arms RPD, just knew the wife would have exploded if I took out another $1400.

Will try to post pics later.

Hey guys, I havent posted in a while. Got myself a Nhm91 last week and I gotta say.. I love it. When I got it all I got was the rifle and a 5 round mag with it. Upon investigation, I found a rivet under the mag release lever, which kept me from using any mag besides the one It came with which had a spot milled out to go over the rivet.
This could not do at all so I quickly got out my uncles Dremel and filed it down. Then to my great fortune I was lucky enough to find a 30 round mag at a local pawn shop. Pretty rare around here. But anyways I went to the woods today with the boys and emptied 90 rounds through it. Gotta say again.... I LOVE IT.

While not a full fledged RPK, I consider the NHM91 to be the 'mini K'. Mini Me.
I left the RPK HG's off for my mini K look. Probably going to switch to an all black AK super 74 look, since I've got a closer RPK clone on the way.

Both of those guns look beautiful guys. lol yah sorry, I forgot to look at the date of the thread, just kinda went with it I guess lol. Like I said, mine came with just the rifle and small mag. Gonna go buy a bipod for it soon and some more 30 round mags. The shop had a 75 round drum at one point but alas, someone bought it :(. Id love to get the stock and pistol grip like what you guys have on yours.

Grind the head off off the rivet as it serves no purpose whatsoever. Then you can use any type of ak mag that your heart desires. It's there just so you have to find those "special" mags and spend more bucks. Take it out. You'll be happy. Mad Max son of Madtechcool
