For anyone knowledgeable in these areas, I'd like to know if my new rifle began as a pre-ban and was neutered, or was post ban all it's life.

The rifle is built on a Stamped reciever

It has a 386 in an oval next to the serial number. I believe this means "Poly-Tech"
Stop me here if I'm wrong, please

The serial number is CW-1XXXX

Below that, there is a portion where a marking was stamped out, and
"MAK-90 Sporter" scratched in, over the finish.

Below that, it says
"Cal 7.62x39MM
Semi-Auto"

On the end at which the stock attaches, the following markings are scratched in
"GBE L.A. CA
MADE IN CHINA"

It has a thumbhole stock, and there was apparently the bayonet lug ground off.

Thank you for any info or thoughts on this.

Benjamin, I'm sure there are others more knowledgeable in this area than I am but this sounds like one of the prebans that got caught in Customs when the '89 ban took effect. I've seen a couple of Norincos that were very similar: Original import markings crossed out and crudely replaced with MAK-90, bayonet lug ground off (although the remnants still retain the cleaning rod). Also many of the muzzle nuts were left on over threaded muzzles or just tack-welded on, the threads still being intact underneath. HTH...

HI THERE,

I AGREE WITH TOMAC, THE POOR RIFLE STARTED LIFE WITH BIG NUTS, BUT THEN CUSTOMS/ATF CUT THEM OFF!! TURNED IT INTO A MAK90 BITCH!!

Is there any way that I can verify this?
