I've shot sparrows with it, and they hung by their feet, like I'd used a .22 Short. The way to go is the 60 gr Nosler Partition softpoint,with a really hot load of AA2520. The latter will get the Noslers up over 2800 fps, even in 11" barrels. That means that it will still expand that sp at 300m, and it will still have over 400 ft lbs out there. In other words, it will still hit like a 160 gr jhp from a 2.5" 357 does, the latter at 10 ft ranges. Where would you rather have a failure to stop, at axeswinging ranges, or so far away that he couldnt hit you BEFORE he was shot in the chest with a 223 sp(if you just had enough sense to be properly using cover)? All he'd be getting is a 2 second flash of your head, as you checked out what was going on. NOONE can hit such a mark, that fast, with ANY rifle, if you just have sense enough to not peek out from the same place all the time.
