View Full Version : changing out VEPR buttstock/pg

I know Krebs offers the service to replace the pig heavy front handguard with a standard model but can I change out the butt and pg with some K-Var poly furniture. My friend wants to lighten up his VEPR IIK in 223 and get a regular stockset on there.

Will it fit?

I think you are overestimating the weight of the front hand guard on the VEPR. The buttstock may be a bit heavier, but I believe the extra weight of the gun comes from the thicker receiver and HBAR.

As for the front hand guard, pull it off and check its weight against a K-var front guard set AND standard front handguard mounting ring. There really isn't all that much difference. I checked.

As for the butt stock, standard one will not fit. The VEPR receiver is angle cut. The Krebs approach is weld material back on to square up the receiver.

Best bet for a light Russian AK is a converted Saiga. With the exception of the .308 Saiga, the Saiga's are a lot lighter. (Thinner receiver and barrel.)

Take off your handguard and see how well balanced the rifle becomes. Replace it with a normal wood handguard and you will save 10 onces+ and have a nicer rifle to shoot from a standing position.

I have a seceret new stock set planned for my Vepr....I wont tell anybody what it is until it's done though. It will be lighter, and look much much better.

While you're at the drawing board, don't forget to consider resistance to barrel heat. The VEPR has one of the best-insulated handguards in the entire AK world. Shaving 10 ounces off the front of the rifle isn't much help if you have to wear 20 ounces worth of welder's gloves just to shoot it!

I think he is suffering from AR15 poisoning.:(

yes Krebs can also replace the butt stock of a veper. He has a machine(dont ask me how it works) but it ads metal back onto the reciever where it is angled to square it off so it will accept a normal AK buttsock. Same with the thumbhole Mac 90. He has done both for me and they came out very nice.
