I've been trying to get on to my local Sheriffs Dept. for about a year now. I just called them to see if they were still concidering me. The Deputy said that a Major who reviewed my file wasn't to pleased with my work history and my application was shelved. She can reopen it ,if I come down on Tuesday.My Question Is it worth it , or am I just wasting my time.

If they are still talking to you, there is a chance. Don't give up. Statisticly, it takes about 5 years from the first application to hiring with a department. It took me about 4 1/2 before I got my opportunity.

I agree with Scott. Took about the same amount of time for me. The Department I work for had a large amount of applications put in and very few spots. We have a low turnover rate. Usually have to wait for somebody to retire.

Don't put all your eggs in one basket, either. Sure, you may want to get into this particular agency; don't hesitate to go to another agency, work a while and then try to lateral to the agency you want to be with. That will establish your credentials with the doubting administration a little more, especially if they are frowning at your work history.

Hang in there man....I moved 500 miles for my first LEO job......it was just a foot in the door so to speak. Now I'm in a large department, it took me almost a year from start to finish to get on here.

Like someone above me posted...don't hesitate to look elsewhere....the game is the same on the streets no matter where you play it.

I was a college student and worked on the drilling/oil rigs in west TX. I got interested in law enforcement after taking a part time job as a juvenile detention officer.
