I'm new to RPKs, but I really think I want one. Where is a good place to look for one and what is a reasonable price to expect to pay? Also for drum mags?

I would like one in 7.62x39 with the pistol grip bipod etc. Would it be wise to get one of those thumbhole stocked ones and start work there? Any help would be appreciated.

us_drag,
I guess you have several options. One of the nicest RPK's around now are the ones sold by Arsenal (Bulgaria) early last year. They only made about 300 and are long but sold out, but you can still see a picture of them on their website. The down side is they are selling in the neighborhood of $1,000 now when you can find them.

I have just purchased a RPK barrel assembly to install on a donor rifle. This buildup is going to end up costing me about $850 not including the price of the donor gun.

Another possible way of going is to just pick up a Norinco NMH91 or Maadi RPM. I believe both include a bipod but they have 20" barrel instead of the 23" on the RPK. These have been selling for around $500.

You can find the drums available in several places. Most prefer the Chinese over the Romanians. I believe the Romanians are running about $75 or so with the Chinese around $100. Recon is selling some 75round drums on the For Sale forum here. I just ordered on myself from him.

Good luck and happy hunting.

If I get the NHM91 can I easily just throw on a Russian wood set (butt, pistol and forearm)? How difficult is the process? Is it legal?

us_drag,
To install a Russian Wood pistol grip stock set you will need to make sure you have the required number of US made parts. I'm no expert but I think you will need 5 parts to make it legal.

US pistol grip (1)
US trigger set (3)
US gas piston (1)

Another consideration is the Russian stock set is for a stamped reciever, I do not know if the NHM91 is a milled or stamped gun. Some others have installed the Russian Wood on the Norinco's, I'm sure they can help you with the particulars of this install.

Try doing a search here on the board, I'm sure you will find a wealth of info.

good luck.

you will have to do some slight modification on the lower RPK handguard, to have it fit on a MAADI RPM......I know because I did it to my RPM, before I sold it. brand new laminated soviet RPK stock set will run you about 50 bucks from I/O. and like mbakercad stated you will have to install 5 US parts in order to put a stock and pistol grip.

I don't know if a RPK stock set will fit a 91.
