I finally broke down and cleaned my Bushmaster M4'gery!!! After testing it with three South African battlepacks (900 rounds), and getting absolutely ZERO malfunctions, I couldn't take it any more!!!! :p

I could not believe the black GUM that encased my bolt and the inside of the carrier. :D

In any case, she's clean and smells with the lovely perfume of solvent. I had to clean her since I will most likely be ordering an EOTech for her next week. Ya can't put a new dress on a girl unless she takes a shower, ya know?

Now watch her hiccup on me next time I'm at the range!!! :(

if you had been paying attention, you would know that RJ has not cleaned his AR since he has owned it. The 900 rounds was just the last range session.
Well RJ I hope she came out purdy under all that grime;)

I love it when "knowledge" gets debunked.

My Armalite 20" HBAR has had zero malfunctions as well, though I clean mine more frequently than every 900 rounds. Mostly though, I clean the barrel, wipe everything else down with an oily rag and reassemble. I haven't done a "major" cleaning on it yet.

Congo, I think she definitely coulda... Of all the AR/M16's I've fired, the Bushmasters have been the most reliable. I haven't been around RRAs too much, but hear they're good as well.

RJ, I just came back from Florida. I took my Bushie with me. My bro in law and I fired 200 rounds of Remington UMC and 400 rounds of that nasty Wolf ammo without cleaning it. I didn't get any jams or misfires. We fired about the same amount of ammo thru my SAR 3, also no problems.

When we got done, we cleaned both of them properly. And, I'm sure that both will repeat their performance if tried again. The jamming myth is just that - a myth.

p.s. Was beautiful weather there. :p

You guys CLEAN your rifles? Geeze I have several thousand (well at least two) through my Bushie. I am ashamed to say that she has not been cleaned in at least two years. Although she only comes out about every other month, when I can get out and shoot!

My Armalite has been rock-solid as well, as has a friend's post-ban Colt.

If the AR-design has a weak link, my money's on that link being the shooter. (Just like every other rifle design.)

I know what you mean RJ. Those "nay-sayers" just like to bad mouth guns, cars, ammo, dogs, or whatever they don't particularly like, or can't afford to own.

It's like the anti Wolf ammo boys over at AR-15.com. They swear up and down it will gum up your rifle, cause misfires, and jams, but I've found that to be totally false in my SAR3, and my Bushmaster.

I do like to clean my weapons every time I take them out though. It's just a habit I developed from the Army that I can't get over. :p

I had seven different M-16s while I was in the military. I had problems with only one. It was an older one made by GM Hydromatic. It didn't even have a trapdoor butt on it. Just a simple rubber buttpad with ridges on it. Unfortunately, it was also the one I had to take into Iraq. Nothing like knowing your weapon has a history of failing to give you the willies while crossing the border. :(

I have two preban Oly Arms AR-15s. Never had problems, except when I lost the little rubber piece that goes inside the extractor spring.

M-16's w/ BFA, & blanks usually jam up a bit, I never had a problem with my A1 and M193 ammo.

My Bushie was extremely reliable.

Being a major consumer of SA surplus, I can vouch for what RJ says, that it is NOT the lube. There is something in the products of combusion of SA surplus that creates an oily/greasy black residue which accumulates even if the bolt and carrier are clean and DRY prior to firing. I did that as a test a while ago and the A2 Bushy Carbine burned through 400 rounds in one range session without a blip. But holy cats, afterward the bolt and carrier looked as if somebody slathered them with moly disulfide grease.

Never has my Bushie jammed. NEVER! Wish I could say the same about my SAR-1. It jammed once in the first 100 rounds. Haven't had a chance to shoot it since then.

My bushy and my dpms have never failed other than when I got a mag that had the lips mashed by the previous owner who always slammed them hard into the well with the bolt closed and that was remedied by bending them back into shape. Other than that, they work flawlessly.

Hehe - old post!

I bumped this over here since we now have a new home to talk about these things. :)

Anyway, after this post, I was inventorying my inventory :p and the number of rounds put through the rifle was actually closer to 11 or 1200 rather than 900. I was only positive about the three battlepacks, but had Win, Rem, PMC and PMP through it as well.

I'm still with no hiccups almost four months later...

No my friend, you are correct in doing what you are doing.

You should feel bad for not cleaning it.
I haven`t cleaned my 1911 from Sundays session:( I`m bad, I`m nation wide.

I sure am glad you folks have used your weapons as guinea pigs.
I don`t think my AR has seen 200 rounds without a cleaning.
I have the time so why not clean it like I was taught.

Sand????we gotz sand, and plenty of it.

My Bushie used to have bolt over failures after I first assembled it.
I adjusted the mag catch and have not had a problem in over 1200 rounds.

The SA 5.56 is a little dirty but man was it cheap ! I still have 2400 rounds in the closet.

No need to convince me; that's chigger-land. I've played golf in that area during the summertime exactly twice.

i know what ya mean. i had a lousy M-16 A1 at first when i was in the Army and i was surprised to see that it was manufactured by the GM transmission division. the best one i ever got to shoot, tho, was the Colt made M-16 A2 (actually was brand new, jut came into the armory a day before it was issued to me and i got to shoot it. found out that the Army was just gettin round to our armory for the change from A1 to A2). it ran like a top, not like that Hydromatic i was issued before. so now i am faced with a perplexing question: Which brand do i go buy now? i know Colt is great, but overpriced. Bushmaster is supposed to be good. Olympic Arms was another that i heard good things on. anyone got any thoughts?

RJ Shooter

For the money, you would not go wrong with a Bushmaster or an RRA. Rock River Arms is a bigtime up and comer. They have gotten nothing but good reviews recently.

RRA will probably make the lower for my next build, but I am very partial to Bushmaster because of their quality. I guess we'll see. :)

When I 1st bought my Bushmaster I refused to clean it for the 1st 2k rounds, then I too broke down and cleaned it. I sold that fine gun too a friend to force him into shooting and have since bought a RRA, which I only put a patch through the barrel occasionally just to protect it.

Past that I cleaned enough of these black rifles when I was in the army.
