Have you ever tried this combo? I got 8 of these from InterOrd for a SAR3 - they function VERY well and are relatively cheap. Mag availability is about the only thing keeping from trying to get a K101...

I have tried this combo. The Weiger mags will fit and function perfectly IF you modify the front reinforcement. There needs to be 0.030" removed from each side. The best way to do this is by surface grinding, if you have access to one. If not, a dremel will do in a pinch. After the mag width is reduced in front, (reduce the width in the front ONLY! DO NOT modify the reinforcement plates that form the feed lips!) The catch tab on the rear will need to be lightly filed until the magazine can be rocked back and the mag catch latches. That's it, and they work just fine. Hope this helps.

Any chance of posting a before and after picture? Would like to see the modification before working on a Weiger magazine.

Give me a little and I'll post a sketch. It will be only a drawing, no actual pictures. The before and after is hardly noticeable unless you know what you are looking for, It will probably be later this evening. I will try to borrow a camera and post some pics tomorrow evening.

Thanks VERY much - this lowers the barrier between me and a K101 QUITE a bit http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/smile.gif

Now - Jimmy... where would I tell my FFL holder to go to get a K101?

Here's the sketch:

After the correct width is obtained, insert mag into mag well and rock back to latch, if the mag does not latch into place, file rear of magazine above tab (not top of tab but vertical surface perpindicular to top of tab) until mag latches firmly without force. I will post pictures later this week. Hope this explains it. I'm not really sure if mags modified will still work with the SAR-3, but if the Bulgarian .223 waffle mag works in a SAR-3, then there should be no problem. As I mentioned earlier, the best way to do this is with a surface grinder. A dial or digital caliper should be used for accurate measurements.

CYA Disclaimer: I cannot be held responsible for any problems this modification causes. Anyone making this modification does so at his/her own risk.

We have a very small number (less than 5 I think) K-101s left in inventory. Get your FFLs in touch if you want one.

I talked to one of our customers Sunday. He is a Sherrif's Deputy in Ft. Bend county, which is next to Houston. He told me he won a Police Sniper's match in Grapevine Texas last month. He was shooting in the open sight division at 100m, and won with a group just under 1". He also won a bunch of money on side bets from AR guys who were pretty sure no AK would shoot worth beans!

He said his trick was never to move the rifle between shots. He said he couldn't realign the sights reliably to the same picture, so he did his groups while "locked" into position on the bench.

I didn't see this myself, but my guess is that he was telling the truth. Consider this a free story with a double your money back guarantee.

blfuller, could you re-post these instructions in the “223 AK mag interchangeability" thread in the Romanian section?

Finally borrowed a camera for the pictures of the Modified Weiger magazine. The first picture has an unmodified on the left and a modified on the right. Note the front reinforcement band. http://www.icehouse.net/blfuller/clipmod1.jpg
The second picture shows the top down view of the feed lips. Note the width of the front of the mags by the thickness of the walls. Modified mag is on the right.
http://www.icehouse.net/blfuller/clipmod2.jpg
The third and last picture shows the back of the magazine. The modified mag is on the bottom. Note the absense of the sharp edge on the modifed magazine to the left of the tab. . http://www.icehouse.net/blfuller/clipmod3.jpg

Hope this clarifys the simplicity of the modifications. Although the Bulgarian .223 polymer looks cool in the K-101, the Weiger looks fine too, for less.

I purchased two of the K-VAR offered Bulgarian Arsenal (30 rd. Polymer) magazines and I have to say they are great. I highly recommend them to anyone who has the cash. I would like to see an offering of the E. German .223 mags (already modified). They look very nice but I'm no machinest.

I have the same gun so I can tell you it's a Bulgarian milled receiver. The rifle is a K-101 built in Houston by Arsenal USA (http://www.globaltrades.com).

Thanks!
I just bought a K101 on Friday.
Will those red plastic converted 545x39 mags
work also?

The Waffle mags offered at $17.95 are for 7.62x39.

The 223 waffle mags shown above USED to be available from KVAR for $50 or so each.
I have heard they are out of those mags.

Mike

Standard orange baklite 5.45 mags will work in the K-101 with <15 rounds loaded. These are the magazines you see advertized in SGN for around $6. If you load more rounds in an unmodified magazine it will not function correctly. Bolt overs, stovepipes, other assorted jams.

If the magazine follower is modified and some material removed from the inside, 25-30 rounds .223 can be loaded in a baklite magazine. Check the Romanian forum for details, apparently this is the standard magazine used in the SAR-3 rifles.
