I mean really, IMO the only thing the VEPR/Saiga has going for it is the ability to be converted to a more authentic RPK with it's re-enforced reciever. I've always thought those RPK actions too heavy to be used in a rifle. True, you have to weld up the rear VEPR sheet metal diagonal cuts, but big deal. There are several 'smiths doing that right now. And Saigas are dirt cheap.

First, the Saiga is NOT an RPK based rec., I dont think its any thicker than an AKM rec. either but I dont feel like taking mine apart to check right now. I think its more along the lines of the 100 series AKs. Second, show us some kits that arnt the mismatched and worn out I/O POS kits and Id have one built!

I think the 308 saigas have the rpk receiver but you would have the mag well issue.

and real good luck trying to get the furniture to fit on the VEPR receiver.

Blood, Yes, people keep saying the .308 but I discount that until someone tells me for sure if a 762 bolt will lock up in the trun. If the serial is stamped on that part like it is most other AKs you cant switch them out and I dont know of any .308 RPK kits.

Redmenace, why wont the furniture fit? Sierra said weld up the back so the angle cut is a none issue and if your putting an RPK kit on it wouldnt be any problem to slip an RPK lower hand guard retainer on. Is there something Im missing?

The Vepr has a proprietary retaining clip for the extended handguard and no "standard" RPK clip. Since the clip is between the gas port and the barrel, you're going to have to do some gunsmithing to get a standard one on, or rig a clip to wrap around the barrel. Supposedly, Mark Krebs has made one of these for the "new" Galil-like Vepr conversion, but I haven't heard if he's going to be selling it as a separate part.

Nonetheless, the proprietary clip is still going to be welded to the barrel and visible.

(I'm not sure why folks can't just leave the Vepr alone. :dunno: )

If your going to be putting on a RPK kit youll be pulling the barrel anyhow so it wouldnt be a problem. Is there any VERPs with a 23" barrel?

PS, what factory is the .308 Saiga made in?

How do you get the gas chamber off of a VEPR barrel. No pins hold them on. On the centerline of the bore their are two holes on each side that look like it may have been pressed into place. If I knew how to remove this without recking it I would have some new handguards.

All you need is the Vepr rifle, Bulgarian RPK Barrel assemply. You could even use the Romanian RPK kit and you would need a RPK stock set. Either wood or polymer. Then send it to a smith such as Krebs Custom for the work. :D

Where can you get the Bulgy RPK barrel assemblies?

K-Var was selling the Bulgarian RPK Barrel Assembly. They have been sold out for a long time. I bought my Bulgarian set about three years ago. Sometimes I see them on E-Bay. But when they go on E-Bay, they sell for an extremely high price. I see the Romanian De-Milled RPK parts kit on E-Bay every so once in a while also. Keep checking the internet and they turn up now and then.
