Does anyone have experience with Olympic Arms AR15s ? All the local shops don't like em and don't have good thing to say about them or DPMS. In fact they won't even handle them. Are they really a pos? any info would be most helpfull.

thanks:confused:

I don't own an Olympic arms or DPMS, but I've heard many reports from folks that do own them and they all have said they were great rifles.

I bought my daughter an Oly Plinker for Christmas. (Lowest price AR-15 money can buy) and have nothing but good things to say about it. She hasn't let me fire it yet, but her reports are that it has very little kick, is very accurate and she has not had any problems at all with it. If their lowest priced one is this good, I have to believe that their higher priced ones are great. Maybe the new alphabet on ARs will be A, B, C, and O. (Armalite, Bushmaster, Colt, and Olympic for those not familiar.)

As for DPMS, my FFL, whose husband is a state champ with a custom Rock River, tells me to stay away from DPMS. She will not say why, but I know that one day when I was at her house, there were a couple of DPMS ARs boxed for return to the factory.

thanks for your feed back guys! i have read some positive things about the Olys at AR15.com and you sure can't beat the price of the Olys. Really makes me wonder why so many shops have so much negitive to say about them. is anyone else getting negitive feedback on Olys form your local shops?
WOW Holmes that is a sweet looking Oly.....how does it preform??

I went to my local "Shoot and Save" gunshop and looked the Bushy, Colt, and DPMS 20", A-2 's over and this is what I came away with. The Colt AR-15 A2 was nice but overpriced, the Bushmaster XM-15 A2 was very, very nice and moderately priced. But the DMPS left me with an empty feeling. It was lighter than the other two and the action on the charging handle felt rough, like it needed deburring and lube. The casted receiver looked like it had pits in the forging and the barrel seemed to be of thinner material. True, it cost about $100- $150 less but, you do get what you pay for. Considering how much your already paying, $100- $150 bucks is a drop in the bucket and a great peice of mind to know you got the best. Get the Bushmaster, you won't be sorry.

AK NUT, why did you not set your daughter up with a SAR-1? Supply problems maybe, out of stock at your house perhaps?;)

I have a DPMS upper, performs flawlessly, and is extremely accurate.

From my experience, gun shop owners are bad people to get gun buying ideas from, if it's not expensive, it's crap in their mind. Of course if your paycheck was going to be 10% of a $500 plinker or 10% of a $1500 Bushmaster/colt which would you be trying to sell?

BrittB, my daughter already has an SAR-3 and an SAR-2. The -2 spoiled her rotten, great shooter, especially with the Romanian threaded sight base with AK-74 brake. Not to mention her assorted .22s and a .17HMR.

Now thanks to AK-net member Shooter2, she wants a Ruger Mark II.

I have a DPMS M4 and it operates flawlessy. The rough action is probably common with all new rifles. It just depends on the way it was packaged and wether or not it was properly oiled. In fact, the gun shop dealer pointed me towards the DPMS. I liked the carbine style over the 20 in. I've had no problems with it so far and even though its a carbine, the accuracy seems to be still dead on. It may not group as well as a 20in would at great distances but that defeats the purpose of it being a carbine. I'm not trying to bee an ass or anything but i'm just trowing in my 2 cents.

These where my observations when I went to the gun shop. I was allowed to freely fondle all the AR's without worry. After comparing side by side, that is what I came away with. I also know they sell their share of DPMS rifles and quite a few come back for warranty issues. Once in a while, the Colts and Bushys will come back too but not as often as DPMS. I feel that the cost to upgrade is only a little more, so why not just go with a Bushmaster to begin with?

Sonicman, your not being an ass, you just have something you want to say. That your freedom and right as an American. Us it often. ;)

You are in Oregan of all places and you are hearing trash talk about Olympics? That's mighty close to WA state, where olympics are made.

I can tell you that Olympic has two major differences from the other manufacturers. For one thing, their chambers run to the minimum of the SAAMI specs for a .223 round to get better accuracy. The plinker has the standard SAMMI chamber and this is why it digests even the ugliest of ammo with ease. This means that shooting crappy out of spec milsurp will cause a serious jamming problem in something with a minimum SAAMI chamber. If you use good ammo, you will get good results and good reliabity. Also, the chromoly barrels aren't chrome lined on their standard barrels. If you properly maintain your rifle, this shouldn't be an issue. I have one pre-ban Olympic AR-15 and another Olympic lower receiver. Both are great and I wouldn't feel a bit ashamed of taking either out on the firing line with a whole bunch of Colt's or anything else for that matter. My olympics function great. I've run 1000 rounds through my pre-ban without cleaning it and it begged for more.

Back from the range update: my daughter still hasn't let me try her Oly Plinker!:D She now has run about 500 or 600 rounds through it, all Sellier & Bellot, and has not had any problems other than consistantly tearing the centers out of the targets at 50 yards!

My Oly plinker is a POS. It's got a gritty feel when you work the action and the finish is horrible. Besides that, the bolt broke in half while shooting one day, ive posted about it numerous times. I guess you get what you pay for...Glad to here your daughter's is working well. I must have got the ugly duckling of the pack.

My Oly PCR4 w/20" HBAR match grade barrel is the best. Super sweet with crisp trigger and awesome accuracy. I bought a Oly lower at a gunshow and purchased the complete PCR kit from Olyarms. It was a real learning experience and came together nicely. Nicely priced too! 424.00 for A3 kit and 169.00 for forged lower. I have shot my bud's Bushy and Colts and would put my Oly on par with those anyday.

All I can say about Olympic arms is, they have terrific customer service. I bought a pre-ban lower awhile back and had to send it back to Olympic because of problems with the safety detent hole in the receiver being out of spec and the trigger pins walking out. They were very pleasant on the phone and told me exactly what's goin' on with my lower. They informed me it was out of spec and they had sent it to be remanufactured, no questions asked, love that lifetime warranty! So now I'll have a brand new pre-ban. Again this is my only dealings with Olympic. Hope this helps.

++++++++++++++++++++++

I owned a Oly "dissapator" style AR (carbine with the full length handguards). In in the areas of fit, finish, and function I would also put in on the same level as the bushmasters and colts i have shot . :D

Olympic has issues with thier upper parts, thier lowers, aside from the shitty cast plinker, are outstanding. Have a bolt 9mm that is out for inspection at the time, I'll let you know how the customer service will be when this is said and done.

THe only negative thing I've heard is to stay away from Lacquer ammo which voids warranty

My Olympic experiance,
I had a Oylmpic pre-ban in 223. with a 20" standard contour barrel. As recieved the rear sight didn't have enough windage to get on paper at 25 yards.
I called Olympic, returned the rifle w/o any issues or questions.
Two weeks later I had a new heavy contour stainless barrel AR that would shoot ~1MOA.
What I took away from the whole experiance is that Olympic stands behind their rifles and will take care of you if there is a problem. I have no problems with buying another AR from them, and probably will when the ban sunsets...
Speaking of sunsets, has everyone here written thier congresscritter to make your feelings known?

After sending my plinker back for repair, I have to say I am satisfied with Oly Arms. Customer service is top notch, like Diesel said. I just can't stand this shitty finish, I took some fine steel wool to all the metal on the rifle and it smoothed out a bit, nocked some of the high points off. Goin to shoot it this weekend, we'll see if the new bolt holds up. Anybody know of a good postban "pin-on" compensator?

Brian,
I have written and e-mailed mine, I also signed a few petitions.

One of the best ar's money can buy. I have had no problems. From what I hear they got better in the last few years. There barrels are very accurate. All the newer barrels besides the match are m16 chambered. I shoot tons of federal xm193. No problems with wolf either. Rifle feels solid. I would compare it with any bushmaster or colt. Yes their coustomer service is awesome. I just think some people are biased. Why spend more for a bushmaster when a oly is the same quality?

That's sounds good, I was hesitant about using Wolf due to the lacquer and the void warranty

Oly's Muzzle Brake attaches w/ 4 set screws and some loc-tite, also looks kinda cool. Their "fixed" tele-stock is a true tele-stock pinned in place with 3 roll pins. when the Ban sunsets the first thing I will do is remove said pins, and Viola! a new "re-fixed" tele-stock.

I just had one of those telestocks put on mine, it looks like its solid. Anybody customize theres? I installed a bipod, and tele-stock so far... Maybe a muzzle brake next.

Changed the sling out to a more practical one. Plan to buy or a three way sling when time permits. Also opened the mag wells way up (well for an Oly anyway). Now all mags drop free, and it'll shoot anything I put through it.

Yeah I notice a really tight fit when I use those Orelite mags.
