Hello everyone.
I need help, I just ordered a select PMKMS parts kit from Global trades on friday and I was wondering which receiver to buy ?
Ohio ordnance receiver are not pre-drilled - but are of good quality and the Hesse are pre-drilled but not as good of quality - my question is how are is it to work on the receivers anyways ?
Should I find a gunsmith to do the job ?
Who is a good gunsmith for working AK's at a good price and turn around time ?
How are the kits are they brand new as said ? Or should I of got the FAC parts kit even though they're not Polish ?
Has anybody built a AK from the ground up and what special tools do I need ?
Whats a good manual for buliding AK's ?
I know I have throw alot of stuff at you guys and thanks for any response you give me.
Take care

Well, lets start at the top

Recievers.
If it is gonna be a std stock gun then HESSE is the way to go. The holes are predrilled and mostly match up.

If it is gonna be a U-folder then it has to be OOW. You can not use a HESSE because one of the holes defaces the serial # and would be a instant FELONY.

GunSmith???
Well it depends on how many Aks you intend to build.
For just building one, then it is VERY costly unless you happen to have a mini-machine shop at hand. You would need a 20 ton press, some machined bucking bars(no-one sells them) to do the rivets. You can use the press to do all the riveting, and to press the barrel in.

I would recommend that you farm out the hard stuff.
Troy @ INRANGE, and Jayson @ IGF can do the hard stuff for @ $125 give or take. They will rivet everything(both trunions and trigger guard). They will press the barrel in and headspace it.
You would get back a barrel action. And in 15 mins you could have a working AK style weapon.

Now if you intend to build a u-folder then for $50 more Jayson can mill the receiver (non-hesse) with the proper cutouts for the polish U-folder trunion.

Lots of people have built the AKs from the ground up.
As far as a manual goes... You are looking at the BEST manual around..> AK-47.net.

OK, can you give me more details and perhaps contact info on who Jayson @ IGF is? Is IGF an FFL and can they order an OOW receiver or two for me?

Or, are there better places to order and then just ship the receiver to IGF for the "repairs"?

Thanks!

I would recommend that you purchase your receiver.
You as a private individual can send your receiver/kit off to IGF, or for that matter ANY FFL holder for repair.
If you did that then you complete gun can be sent DIRECTLY to you without having to deal with a FFL holder.
What I would do is find someone doing a private sale in your area of a receiver.

DrugRunR,

Thanks for the advise and I do have a pair of OOW receivers on the way. My local FFL charhed me a little more that I had hoped but he needs to make a living too...?

I want to build one into a non-ban underfolder configuration (underfolder, bayo ug, threaded barrel BUT non-Semiautomatic) as described here http://www.gunsnet.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=117107

The second I will try to build as a more traditional Post-Ban AKM with the fixed stock, and no evil features.

I have been looking at the various links, pages, and pics of the process to build one of these and I am not sure it is worth it for me to buy all the tools I would need to do this myself... Now, I just need to find a gunsmith that agrees with my ideas about a post '94 compliant bolt action AK with all the evil features that look like they belong on an AK! Then I will have them do the 1st rifle for me and then I can try to do my own build with the second kit after I finish some of my other projects!

I have talked with Chris at AKUSA about doing Polish builds, He had just finished one, and was into doing more, plus you get a super tough powder coated finish.
