I know on the Fal rifles the lugs are milled or ground down is this the case with the AK's ?
To keep the lug you have to give up one of the other forbidden parts.
IIRC
Bayonet lug
Flash supressor
Pistol grip
Detachable magizine
Collapsible stock
You can have only two of these.
Don't quote me as this is from memory.

Threaded muzzle
Pistol grip stock
Flolding stock
Bayo Lug
Detachable mag that can hold more then 10 rounds.
What you can do on the polish guns is file down the sides of the bayo lug, leaving the cleaning rod holder intact. You can not attach a bayo to the weapon since it will not lock on.
After all, do you intend to go sticking people with your BAYO?
You know this assault weapon law is just CRAP.
You know what the difference between a ASSAULT WEAPON and a Sporting weapon is?
The number of evil features.
If you limit it to 2 evil features as listed above then it is a "sporting weapon"

Thanks for those of replied.
I kind of had that feeling, no I don't intend to stick someone with a bayonet, just another thing to do on my to do list or do the gunsmiths take care of that too when building a rifle from the parts kit?
The Rich @ CGW always took care of me, I sure wish he did AK's.
The man can build a Fal most people can only dream about, you see his park jobs.

My motto is "If you build, no bayo" simple as that. Your builder is required to mill down the bayonet lugs on either side, if you want a normal looking compliant unit. Now I'm confused!

If it cannot receive a bayonet, is it still a bayonet lug?
If "function" is the legal parameter defining a bayonet lug, why not ADD material rather than grinding it off to achieve these same ends?
Suppose you created a "C" shaped bracket and tac welded it in place where the bayonet would usually install? It would positively prevent the attachment of a bayo in similar fashion to simply removing the lug altogether. For a more temporary solution, perhaps silver solder it on.
Taking the next logical step, could the grooves simply be filled with silver solder with the hopes of melting it out when the AWB sunsets in '04?

I have been thinking about this also. Does anyone know if this solution would satisfy the BATF? I have several parts kits which I hope to have built soon and I really really hate the idea of having the lugs ground off.

Well..
If you were gonna get your gone painted(moly coated or gunkote, or whatever) then I guess you could fill in the slots with silver solder or for that matter, JB WELD. File them flush and paint away.
You would not be able to put a BAYO lug on it.
No one would know that you used JB weld instead of silver soldering or welding.
Just to let you know, PARK does not stick to JB WELD or Silver Solder.

mbakercad-
I don't know why the BATFE would disapprove of such a scheme. They already allow the covering of another prohibited feature, a threaded barrel, via a welded muzzle nut or brake. In this particular instance they do not require the mutilation (removal) of the feature, just a "permanent" lockout from it.
That said, this is likely something you would want an official ruling from the BATFE before attempting.

i can see it now:
(Interrogation)
Agent Smith: As you can see, we've had our eye on you for some time now, Mr. Anderson. It seems that you've been living two lives. In one life, you're Thomas A. Anderson, program writer for a respectable software company, you have a social security number, you pay your taxes, and you help your landlady carry out her garbage. The other life is lived in BAYONET LUG MODIFICATION, where you go by the hacker alias GIMPBOY and are guilty of virtually every BAYONET LUG CRIME we have a law for. One of these lives has a future, and one of them does not. I'm going to be as forthcoming as I can be, Mr. Anderson. You're here because we need your help. We know that you've been contacted by certain individuals seeking BAYONET LUG ADVICE, men on AK-47.net. Now whatever you think you know about these men is irrelevant. They are considered by many authorities to be the most dangerous men alive. My colleagues believe that I am wasting my time with you but I believe that you wish to do the right thing. We're willing to wipe the slate clean, give you a fresh start and all that we're asking in return is your cooperation in bringing known terrorists to justice.
GIMPBOY: Yeah. Wow, that sound like a really good deal. But I think I got a better one. How about I give you the finger... and you give me my phone call.
Agent Smith: Um, Mr. Anderson. You disappoint me.
GIMPBOY: You can't scare me with this Gestapo crap. I know my rights. I want my phone call.
Agent Smith: Tell me, Mr. Anderson, what good is a phone call if you're unable to speak.... You're going to help us find those people with BAYONET LUGS ON THEIR POST BAN RIFLES, Mr. Anderson whether you want to or not.
