View Full Version : Occasional hang-ups with HP ammo

I love my VEPR II (7.62x39), but it's not terribly reliable with HP ammo. When shooting Wolf HP, the bullet nose sometimes gets caught on the edge of the feed ramp (if you can call that thing a "ramp") as the bolt is pushing the round out of the mag. I've never had a stoppage of any kind in at least 2000 rounds of Wolf FMJ. The mags are 30-round steel from who-knows-what-country. The hang-ups occur maybe once every 50-100 rounds -- not very often, but often enough that I wouldn't use HPs for self-defense in this rifle.

Can someone shed some light on this? Are these hang-ups normal for HP ammo in AKs -- which I assume were designed for FMJ anyway -- or could it be the ammo? Are the mags maybe sitting a bit too low in the receiver?

Thanks in advance....

AK's were designed around FMJ ammo. Unless Robarms recommmed HP's you really have no recourse in getting it fixed. I have read stories for just about every AK type rifle out there having one person's rifle eating HP's all day long and the next person with the exact same model AK not taking the HP ammo. One other cavet about the current VEPR rifles is that Robarms installs a custom feed ram to make Hi_caps work in the new rifles. This may be a problem for some if the feed ramp on the trunnion is not installed correctly. I would call Robarms and see what they have to say.

I've put several thousand rounds of 7.62 x 39 Wolf JHP through mine without problems.

If you're using a recoil buffer, try temporarily removing it. Buffer Tech buffers seem to be particualrly prone to FTFs; the Blackjack Red model is pretty much trouble-free.

From what I hear you arnt supposed to have any buffer in the VEPRs at all.

First I would call RobArms.

My NHM-91 did that. A tiny chamfer will cure it.
