went to a gunshow last weekend and bought a bunch of wooden ak furniture parts.

i really like the look of the pk heavy machinegun stock, so i attached it to my vepr.

the pk stock is not shaped like an ak stock, the end where it meets the reveiver is cubic, so that's a good basis to start carving.

i did it slow and carefully, used no electric tools, just a fine saw and some wood carving equipment. the wood was very hard but with the sharp (new) tools it was nice to work with. no splinters.

the stock is fixed with the two vepr screws on the top, and at the bottom it is supported by the pistol grip. (i carved out a hole in the stock so the pistol grip fits right in). the grip needed no modification. i don't have the right screw yet, but i'll order one today.

the work is not completely done yet, but what you see on the picture is the result of 2.5 hours of work... i am quite satisfied with it.

next problem is the proper attachment of the handguard.

*NICE* wood!

Any ideas about how to attach a carrying sling? Looks like the stock has a strap for attaching a sling on the back, but the foregrip appears to be lacking one.

thanks!

the thing on the top of the stock is the cap of a little container with grease. the container is inside the stock and there's a brush attached to the cap.

i do not plan to attach a sling to the gun since it's only a range gun. but i could buy one of these:

it's a genuine gdr-ak-part, around 2.50 euros.

and i could still use the original sling screw under the barrel.

That PKM stock is smooth as glass, Hamburger.

(I need to hang out in the Vepr forum more, considering that mine is my pride and joy and all. ;) )

Hot shit! The main problem making hesitant to purchase a VEPR is the fact I would not be able to install 'AK like' furniture on it. This seems to counter that statement.. btw, as you previously said, how will you properly attach the handguard(s)?

The easiest way would be to take a RPK retainer, cut it thru on the bottom so it could be spread aprt to slip over the barrel, then weld it back together. I believe Krebs does something simialiar to this on his conversions.A standard AK gas tube should work for the top.

that's a nice stock on your VEPR.......there is no PK stock or ak stock sets at gun shows here. and the ak stock sets that can be found, are the AK47 type and they are beat to hell and back, not even good enough for kindling

I gotta ask how one wouold solve the parts count issue on this.

Does modifying a PK stock to fit a Vepr make it an American part? Or would you simply have to replace your floorplates and followers?

isn't the stock on the VEPR's foreign to begin with?

The composite stock that comes on the VEPR's are made by Robinson Arms, so it does count as one of the US made parts. Interesting question though regarding the modified PK stock as counting towards a US made part.

It seems to me that if you destroy the part in the process of changing it Ð it can no longer fit the rifle it was built for Ð then it seems to me that it would be no more different than any other piece of wood.

A "Handcarved in the USA from recycled wood" ink-stamp is on the smartassed side, but it would probably keep one out of trouble.

thanks guys... :D

i still didn't solve the problem with the handguard, because the ban of evil-looking rifles in germany was partially renewed...
that means i am still allowed to modify the gun, but i am not allowed to take it to the range like that :(
it's just too nice to shoot to be a safe queen.

but:

why don't you make your own stock???
get some maple wood (ebay), saw it, carve it, file it, sand it.
just make sure to be slow enough, to avoid taking away too much wood. for a tight fit, copy the exact shape of the original stoch where it meets the receiver.

i'll do it as soon as i know which stock shape will be safe and legal for this gun in germany.

(note: i am not a professional craftsman and i only have a box of cheap tools, but -hey- i'm a guy ;) )
