Just range tested my Choate stocked, bed-liner coated hand-guard .308 Vepr aquired back in '98 or 99 shot great groups under 2 1/2" with Port. With a steadier rest and better shooter, I'm positive another 1/2 to 1" could get knocked off of that. A warning to all you VEPR-holics out there -- the finish (I assume enamel) is susceptible to Hoppe's number 9 -- eats it like acetone. Never happened to any other rifles with painted finishes. Probably missed the baking on stage back in Russia. So just in case don't be sloppy with the No. 9, my bolt and muzzle end can attest to it. Time to find a new finish. Have a nice day Avatar Out:eek:
If you think Hoppe's is bad, don't even think about Mpro7! While this cleaner is awesome for the bore, it will dissolve the finish almost instantly. I learned the hard way that Breakfree CLP is both safe and effective for everything outside of the bore.
As for redoing the finish, Robinison Arms tech support recently quoted me the following: "The paint we have found to be the closest to that of the rifle (Russia won't tell us what it is) is made by Seymour Of Sycamore paint #160838. If you have an oven to bake the paint on that is the best approach for a glossy shine and stronger finish"

Just send the rifle to Global Trades & have them Parkerize it. No more problems!
About $75, I believe.
Just my $0.02...

WOW, that is really scarey. I love my new VEPR K. Thanks for the heads up. It must really suck to find such things out first hand though.

Tetra Lube grease seems to eat any coated finish I've tried it on, watch out for that stuff, might work good lubricating, but if it's going to damage my weapon in the process, it kind of defeats the purpose it was intended.

Haven't had any trouble with CLP
Shooter's Choice ate the paint off the muzzle on mine. Oh well it still shoots great.
I use CLP to clean, lubricate, and preserve all my guns inside and out. I have not had any finish issues with it on my VEPR,Saiga's,or any other guns.
That is typical for Russian weapons paint, nothing wrong with your rifle. The paint is meant to protect the parkerizing from moister to prevent rust. Not supposed to be purdy, or last forever.

Alex will tell you to use LSA oil. 1 quart cost about $8.00 if you can find it at a gun show. I've used it and it works great - inside & out ;)
