I am looking into building an 80% casting of and ar-15 (Cal legal project). I am wondering if anybody has any input into building these. I am having a hard time finding a 1-3/16 16tpi tap that won't cost me as much as the receiver. Is it worth trying to rent a jig for this project? Is it worth even doing this project? Any help would be great. Thank you in advance

Well that depends, Do you want the sense of accomplishment of finishing a lower and all the costs and frustrations that go with it or do you just want an inexpensive lower ?

There are many cheap lowers out there and I would reccomend you get one of those and save yourself some time, money and aggrevation.

HTH :)

Actually there is only one cal legal receiver in production and it is over $300 now... I know there are receivers that are under $100 but I can not get them here... I am just trying to figure which will be more economical...

The question is whether or not the receiver you manufacture will be legal anyway? If not, the money you save won't cover the down payment on a lawyer to defend you.

Generally speaking, AR receivers ar so cheap that I am actually surprised that there is still much of any market for these 80% blanks. The jigs to finish them are available for rent if you check around, but be careful. You only get one chance.

My suggestion is to just say goodbye to occupied Kalifornia and move to a state that will recognize the US Constitution.

Just my .02

A made receiver will be legal as long as it is not stamped ar 15 or any varient that is listed by name on the ban list. All that would have to be done to avoid the general classification is to make it a fixed ten round magazine, and a fixed magazine is one that is not removable with out the use of a tool. But I agree with you that there are so many cheep receivers that are about the same cost of the 80%'s. And the Cal legal receivers just went up another $100...
