I want to put a RPK stock set on my NHM-91, but the hammer looks different, it has a step in it, the Red Star hammer looks like a regular AK hammer ,no step. Will it work ? I've seen alot of NHM-91 to "RPK's" on the boards so I know someone can help me out here . The MAK-90 hammer isn't like that, dose the NHM-91 have a shorter bolt ? Any info. would be great. -Thanks

When I did my NHM-91 to RPK I used a Gordon FCG. Just dropped it in, added a US slant brake, gas piston, pistol grip and mag followers. The RPK stock set came from K-Var. Here is how it came out (pic taken before I got the US pistol grip in mail).

Kyron4, my friend, please forgive me, but what does the shape of the hammer have to do with installing an RPK stock set. I'm tired, so type slowly.....:D (I have been getting up at oh-dark-45 to go to work lately.....04:45) The operating system of the NHM91 is the same as any other standard receiver AK. Norinco might have changed the shape of the hammer to make it look different than that evil one in the AK "assault looking " rifles. They have done sillier things to try to sell their stuff in this country. Result? Still banned!
We need to get together soon for another Gunsnet shoot. Talked to Shooter2, Steel Core, and Owen80 recently and they are up for one.

The shape of the hammer has to do with the needed US parts required to put a pistol grip/RPK stock on the rifle. The Redstar hammer is the same shape as a Rom. hammer and I didn't know if it would still work in a NHM-91 since the hammer face is shaped different, I believe the bolt is shorter than Euro, bolts.. All's good though, I got the US parts in, RPK stock set put on,( lower handguard was a job!), RPK rear sights, Russian sling ,muzzle nut, and Russian 75rd drum. I love it !!! , it's the poorman's "RPK".
nhglyn, dose your hammer face hit the bolt square/flush ? Mine seems to have a small gap between the hammer face and botton of the bolt. Hits slightly more to the top. Shoots fine, just wondered.
Imanaknut, keep me posted when and where the shoots going to be. I've been pretty busy with work and ,don't laugh ,Girlscouts (I have two daughters), but hope I'll be free for the shoot.

Sorry, forgot it has the dumb-hole stock. Like I said, I should be in bed now! :D U.S. parts thing, need sleep.... Since the bolt is shorter, the obvious is to do the work to install the U.S. hammer and see if it hits the bolt correctly. If it does, you should be ok. Even if the bolt has to travel a little further to hit the bolt, as long as it strikes the face squarely. you should be ok. Having to stroke further to hit the bolt affects the timing, but only if you were firing full auto. In semi auto, all it does is delay the hammer strike slightly. Since the bolt is already locked up, it shouldn't be a problem.
The second thing to look for is does the carrier reset the hammer correctly. If it doesn't, you could find yourself with the dreaded full auto condition. ;) Actually it would be more like slam fire, not desireable.
My 2 cents, install the U.S. hammer, check the function manually, then if it seems ok, take it to the range, and load only one round to function check, make sure you have it pointed down range just in case when you rack it. If that fires ok, put 2 rounds in the mag, point it down range, pull the trigger for the 1st round and make sure you hold the trigger back. If only one round fires, release the trigger and fire the second. If all is still ok, run a mag or two through it to make sure the rifle fuctions ok. If it still is good, build your RPK. If not, you still have a nice NHM. My bet is that it will be ok.
Yes it is a lot of work, but it is well worth it to do it right.
Good luck and keep in touch, I would love to see your new RPK!

My NHM 91 based RPK as an RSA fire control group (went right in), Tapco gas piston, Z_recto grip and a Global Trades muzzle nut along with a complete Romanian RPK barrel assembly, Russian Bipod and Russian laminated furniture. I only have to fit a stock that is in better shape to it and have it painted. It's big, heavy and absolutely great.
