It seems that my custom AR likes the 52gr Sierras with 23 grains of Varget

Hey 308. I was thinking about buying some dies for the .223 this week and try reloading for my AR. My question is with the Varget powder you used. Does it burn pretty clean? I was trying to choose a powder and have only used IMR in the past, which isnt the cleanest burning. My barrel is 20 inches and I want to use either 55 grain or 62grain fmj. . Anyways If you like varget I was going to give that a try (since it would also work in my .17rem and 22-250), but I also want to use a powder that burns very clean.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum EATLEAD

The Varget seems to burn very clean. I use it for reloading my .308 and .223

The only thing I don't like about it is that it's stick shape seems to use more space in the casing. I think the max powder load for Varget in the .223 is 27.5gr (compressed).....I could not get that ammount into my Federal & PMC brass.

Good thing 23 grains is the magic number for my 1/8 twist 20" Bbl :)

Also, get the SB dieset since you'll want to completely re-size your .223 casing. The semi-autos are sensitive in this regard.
