Now that you say it, it clicks in my head and I see it also.:p The angle of the rifle in the picture kinda played trick on my eyes. I first thought it was one of the grenade launching mags but discounted it due to the probability of them actually having the correct grenades and launching blanks. Still intersting to see a unique peice of AK in a third world country. Sad part is the guy probably paid less than $50 dollars for it but would go for $300+ as a kit here.:D

Two tales from Africa:

A) Captured AKs in Angola and Namibia often had the bayonets attached, even tho' hand-to-hand combat was extremely unlikely. The 'logic' was that the bayonet made the AK longer and therefore, 'more powerful'. :ak:

Perhaps that's the fighter's ju-ju we're looking at in this photo.

B) The magazine bases were often beat-up. Seems that the AK with magazine fitted was just the right height to make a field-expedient camp stool.

Another one of these in Liberia, I think we have a trend going. It looks like they have the same granade launcher attachment. Maybe longer is better for them. The launcher is deffinitly not Polish. If that gun was a wz. 60, it would have a milled receiver. The government soldier below has a folder and I think it's stamped also. http://www.gunsnet.net/album/data/500/20380jojo-med.JPG

Last pic looks like a yugo or possibly a Iraqi knockoff of a yugo. Looks like three vent holes in the handguard.

More government soldiers with Yugo's, and I'm not sure what the guy on the right is holding. http://www.gunsnet.net/album/data/500/20380One_more.JPG :D

AK-Fan,
Yeah, my bad for not making my post clearer - the drum was of interest, couldn't tell if it was an RPK or not. Serbian link on Monday.

Meanwhile, behind the AK and some ancient PK/PKS* (I think) - look at the dude's eyes. Good googly-moogly!

Like somebody out of a Joseph Conrad novel....

FOOTNOTE: Different war, same WECSOGging of a PK. Guess they don't like the extra weight.

Damn, that dude with the yellow eyes looks friendly. I wonder if he painted that Yugo ak yellow to match his eye? The machinegun is a PK without the flash-hider

Why is it that most of these people carring AK's don't have vest's or pouch's for extra mags? 30rd's and thats it? Run like hell after that? Strange but that has always bugged me!

recon,
these guys are trained pros, one shot-one kill, they dont need more than a 30 rounder.
Why do you think some take off the rear stock or dont even shoulder their weapon when they fire, pure proffesionals.
