View Full Version : I am making a Tokarev barrel

I got some Parker Hale .308 Mauser barrels to play with.
I am cutting one in the lathe to be a Tokarev pistol barrel.
I think the way the commies made them was on the lathe and then welded on the lug that is pinned to the link.

One problem I will have is the PH bore is .2985" and no stock pilot will fit. Standard is .300".
I will have to pay extra for a custom 7.62x25mm Tokarev reamer. I have tried making chambers lots of times with drills, boring bars, straight fluted reamers, and home made rreamers. It is just allot easier and better if I pay the money. The stocked reamers are ~$50, and custom will be at least $20 more.

Another problem is if I have a long bull barrel, there is no way to get the bushing on the barrel. I am going to have to make a bushingless tapered barrel.

This, if it works, will turn a Tokarev into a bull barreled rifle. I will make a scope mount from the barrel to come back over the slide.

I made a Turk Mauser into a a scoped, bull barrel 45acp, and some asked, "What on earth for?".
I do this stuff because it interests me.

It does sound interesting, and it certainly sounds like you're having fun. Thats what this hobby is all about, doing something that you enjoy in your spare time.

Why the Tok, I know they're inexpensive, but it seems like a standard 1911, would provide a better platform, for custom gun work? The Tok is one of the smaller variants, it seems to me like it would be easier to work with something a bit larger.

Of course there are a lot of custom 1911s, custom Toks are definitely a rare bird.

It sounds like you're having a good time, don't let me keep you from it. :D

Today I am working on the scope mount for the long bull barreled Tokarev. The scope mount will be mounted to the barrel and sweep back over the slide.

I have the lump welded on and the link is pinned and working.

I cut the extractor relief.

I am kind of stuck looking for a reamer:

1) I can rent a 30 Mauser remaer for $25, but the pilot is .300" and the Parker Hale bore is .2985.

2) GS will sell me a 7.62x25mm Tokarev reamer with .298" floating pilot installed for $175.

So far I have $34 invested in the barrel and $35 invested in the welding and link mounting. Sometimes it is difficult to get accuracy AND be cheap.

I am seeing 184-051-301 as 30 Luger, which is a shorter cartridge.

If you look at Clymers search data base feature:
http://www.clymertool.com/design/index.html

You will see that BOTH the 30 Mauser and 30 Luger reamers have .299" solid pilots.

I am still searching for a reamer.http://www.thehighroad.org/attachment.php?s=&postid=399367

Are you gonna put a stock on it?

Maybe a stock later, things have moved slowly.

I chambered it today.
I did not want to spend the money on a custom Tokarev reamer with floating pilot, so I got a Clymer 30 Mauser reamer with fixed .300" pilot.

To get the pilot to fit, I pounded a .3000-" pin gage down the breech far enough as I want the pilot to go. It was much harder getting out, but its is all ok now. A little hard on the cleaning rod.

I don't have a headspace gage, so I used some different brands of Tokarev ammo.

I didn't use the lathe, just put the barrel in a vice and clamped on to the reamer with vice grips. I put sinky Surfered cutting oil on the reamer and went in and took a little material out by hand. Then I pulled it out with hammer strikes on the vice grips [watch the fingers]. Then I washed the reamer in gas and oil with a tooth brush. I pushed a patch down the bore. I repeated that process for hours.

I have the extractor cut cut, but I need to make the feed ramp and finish the scope mount.

Looks Like An Interesting Project....

Are You Planning On Making Any threaded Tok Barrels In Either 9mm Or 7.62x25 In the Future ???

It Would Be Nice To See A Tok With A Fake "Silencer" On It...

Or Some How,Taking the Barel Bushing And Having A Compensator Attached To It...That Would Be Cool:up:

I have a scope mount on it.

I need to cut the feed ramp and go to the range.

I have a 2x7x32 Leupold Vari-II rifle scope on it.
I was using S&B 7.62x25mm factory ammo.
The chamber is reamed with a 30 Mauser reamer, but the differences are minute, and have to do with a shoulder angle on a shoulder that is barely visible.
I used no recoil spring.
I fed single shot without a magazine.

At 50 yards I shot two 5 shot groups; 2.1" and 2.5"
At 100 yards I shot one 5 shot group: 4.2"

Much better groups would be possible:
without wind
with a better rest
with a shooter who is a better shot with a pistol
with better ammo.

A close look at the picture begs the question.....How are the spent cases being ejected? Looks like they would pop up, and fall back into the chamber....

There is not enough slide velocity to auto eject, with such a heavy barrel.

I have been pulling back the slide and they pop out to the right.
