Are there certain bayonet types that are banned from military use? I've heard something about a "+" or "V" shaped bayo that has been banned. Is this correct or a urban legend?

Only hollow point bayonettes are prohibited by the Genoa Salami Convention.

:D

Seriously, I don't know, but that sounds like Gunshop Commando rumor to me.

Well actually they may be banned. Triangular, Y-shaped or X-shaped bayonets make holes that can not heal up on their own. But with todays medicine and stitches it's not a problem.

Some of the first medical research on the human digestion tract occured as the result of a soldier being bayoneted with a triagular bayonet at Ft. Mackinaw up in what's now Michigan. The wound didn't heal and the Doctors actually stuck a cork in his belly. Because of this they were able to observe what happened to food after it was swallowed. Like how long it took to get there and then what the stomach did after the food arrived. Like the secretion of gastric guices, (acid) to dissolve the food.

Kind of brings new meaning to the phrase Hey buddy . . . stick a cork in it!

dmk0210's answer is the one I was expecting.

You saying there may be some truth to this?

that is a bunch of horseshit on the triangle bayonet. I know for sure, is that if a soldier modifies a issue bayonet to cause a more grevious wound that is a illegal bayonet.

 Your answer makes no sense sfc ret.

If you don't belive me then I guess you'll have to take it up with the Ft. Mackinaw museum as they are the ones that listed the charcteristics of triangular bayonets making a Y shaped cut that wouldn't close up on it's own.

I should have been more clear, the bayonet itself is not illegal, yes it causes that type wound, but that does not make it illegal and that is not the reason you don't see them anymore. a blade type bayonet can be used as a knife, as well as a bayonet and has more functionality then a triangle type in a battlefield, .......that is what I meant about triangle bayonet being horseshit. (the illlegal part, not the wound causing part of it)

the only thing that makes a bayonet illegal under the law of land warfare, is if a soldier modifies a issue bayonet that will cause grevious wounds, like "notching" a bayonet. just like it is illegal for a soldier to modified issue rounds to produce a more devasating wounding effect.

Point seems kinda moot{pun intended :) )....If you have to bayonet someone you aren't thinking of wounding them......

true....but then again people have survived bayonet attacks......just like they have survived from being shot by a bullet.........bullets where designed to kill also, but sometimes don't.

SFC is correct. There are "humanity" guidelines the Military has to abide by.

Everyone has heard of the Geneva accord but there are several pacts and treaties alot of people never know about.

So to put it in its simplest terms is this the answer?...

No the "+" "Y" shaped bayo's aren't banned as long as it's officially issued. BUT... IF a soldier modifies an issued bayo to be more lethal/destructive THAT is illegal.

Honestly, I was expecting "urban legend. End of thread."
