Hello Guys
I know very little about AR-15 but I have decided to look into buying.
I would like to know, just in case I decided to build it part for part
Which parts would I need to get through an FFL and which parts
could I have delivered direct to my door?
This being my first AR I will probably buy a whole rifle but then if I
wanted more parts to mix & match or whatever, I would still need
to know what AR-15 parts would need to go through an FFL
Thanks

All you need an FFL for is the stripped lower. Every thing else is okay.
Buying a complete rifle your first time would probably be the way to go. You can always buy or biuld a different upper for it later. I recomend Bushmaster rifles. At least Bushy bolts and barrels. When it comes to magazines, USGI.

I guess the Lower is considered the receiver and need an FFL
Thanks

Yes, the 'lower receiver' is what is considered a Firearm by the feds, and it requieres FFL intervention, everything else can be left at your door step.
I would encourage you to try to build at least the lower, if you order a 'kit' it will come with all you need to complete a rifle in about two hrs work. Is not that dificult, you can find excelent instructions online and requiere a minimum of brain and tools, I did it, and you will learn so much about the internals of your rifle, creating a perfect bonding between you and your rifle. :D

I have built five AR-15's over the years and every one of 'em worked great! Some of the minor details to keep in mind are to look for a metal trigger gaurd as opposed to the plastic supplied in the kits..also you will want to get the hard "silver" anodized buffer...both of these parts I ordered from Numrich..the other parts were all Bushmaster...and Oh yeah...I personally like the older "tear drop" style forward assist compared to the newer round knob...smoother and more ergonomic...just a minor detail and really a matter of choice...be sure you lay your hands on a field headspace gauge just to be sure and enjoy...;)

I assembled an AR in 2 hours using the instructions that can be found on AR15.com with a kit from J&T Distributing and a Bushy lower I ordered through a local gunsmith. It's not too hard.

I just bought a Bushmaster shorty.
A2 upper with AK break & pined M4 stock
Ran 100 rounds 55gr .223 through without a hitch.
Now it's time to do come cleaning
Thanks again
