View Full Version : AR-10 A4 Range report...

I took the AR-10 out last night after work. I mounted a Leupold 3/9 scope off another gun and started out at 45 yards...just to see if I'd hit the paper. Nope.
I had to move up. Found it to be shooting way low. Did a few modifiactions to the scope and got it up on the paper.
Once I was on at 45 yrds I moved back to 100 yards awas able to (pretty much) zero the ol' girl in. It only took 20 rounds too so I saved some ammo for later.
The gun functioned fine with a couple exceptions.
One, the chamber was pretty tight and the first round kinda hung a little outside of battery and it took some serious pulling to eject the round. Once I did this, I chambered the next one without a problem. Although I expect some lube may help?...or the Port. ammo may be a bit swollen?
The other rounds (19) did fine as the gun loosened up a bit.
It's certainly heavy (compared to an AR-15).
It was very accurate and I expect it will get some more use tonight. It's a hard gun to set aside!
The recoil...I'd compare to the CETME I fired a few weeks ago.
Here's a target photo from the bench at 100 yards...the last five shots last night...the final three were pretty close. I was using a sturdy bench w/sandbags....a secure shooting position.

Love2Shoot,
Well, last night I lubed the ol' girl and ran another 20 rounds (I'd have shot more but my buddy was shooting when I got to the range)...but...
The fresh lube made a WORLD of difference. I had plenty of grease (Tetra?) on the moving parts, but I think it was pretty thick and didn't "give" like Break Free. It was much smoother and I enjoyed shooting it more because I also added a Hogue grip and a butt extension which helped a little (ape arms!).
My groups were not as good but I was hurrying a bit.
A super gun to shoot!!
I may have to get a few mor magazines, but for now, I'll manage with the single 10 round which came with the gun.

I forgot to ask a couple questions.....
is the hand guard free float, or standard?
barrel 16" or 20"?
If I make mine black, I might will use the Ergo grip overmolded grip. If I go with a color, Coyote brown, I will just use the standard coyote brown. Even thinking of doing a M4 tele stock on it.............

Back at you...
It looks to be a standard 20" with a stainless barrel. It has no sights on the top (thus A4) and the interesting thing I noticed is the front mounting is not shiney stainless steel like the A4 configurations in Armalite's catalog. They probably changed the design a little. I'll post another updated photo later...w/the scope, Hogue grip and butt extension.
Oh, one other little side note (I mentioned this in an earlier post in the C&R Forum)...I picked up this gun Tuesday in a Pawn Shop for $525.00 plus sales tax! They had put three out and sold two Monday for $550. plus tax...I got the last one...as I was handing the lady the money a guy walks in and asks "where's the AR-10?"
Lucky find.

RJ Shooter,
In this case, I think being lucky is exactly what happened, I was looking for an old S&W .357...the AR just happened to be on the rack when I came in the door.
Now my Colt AR has a big brother.

az-ar,
Thanks. I'm going to start shooting it again...I tried having a Jewel two-stage trigger in it but now it won't pop the surplus ammo I've already purchased.
If I decide I'm shooting mil-surp ammo for the long/medium haul...
I may try try a heavier hammer spring and see if that inexpensive change will work, if not I will put the Armalite factory trigger back in after a little polishing and put the Jewel back in the gun once I've started reloading.
Or...I could just start reloading now! Hmmm...
There is no less expensive way to shoot! I just need to buy a few items...like a "Rock Chucker" ect...I have a good bit of the other reloading "goodies" since I already reload for handguns.
