Way back when, back before the war, I was in the Marine Corps. Part of qualifying with the M-16 was 10 shots, prone, at 500 yards against a man sized target (with iron sights). These were the easy points. You had 10 minutes to take your 10 shots. This is what I consider "fine" accuracy. I would like to reproduce this accuracy with an AR style rifle, but now that I look around at some, there's so many variables.
For instance, I think (and correct me if I'm wrong...) that the military uses a 1:7 twist rate in their barrels. They also chose a round that would stabilize with this twist rate, the SS109 (right ?). So if I find an AR with a 1:7 twist barrel, and use ammo with the same weight as SS109 (what's its weight, anyone know?), that should be a good start on re-creating an accurate AR, right? I would like to avoid buying something too far removed from military specs. Anyone got any advice?
