1886 as of now. Still way too low. Signed it last week in the 1700s and thought it would have broken at least 2000 by now. :(

Itchy Trigger Finger,
I don't understand it either. I know there is a lot of people who don't put into online petitions, but still there should be a lot more signatures. I sometimes wonder what is important to people. I also think many do not want to sign in because of the false illusion that it will die in committee. Maybe this time it will, but they don't think about the next time, and the time after that. I think a renewal bill will keep coming up to play the averages, like a shotgun blast. Eventually it will hit. Along with the petition, people should send letters and make calls too. I think even less are doing that.

Number 1910. :)
Now, do these online petitions really do anything? How do they work? Will anyone in congress ever see this?
(I think this is why alot of people don't sign these because they think it is a waste of time. I don't care though. I have nothing but time to burn at work. ;) )

Sorry but online petitions don't really do crap except make the people who sign them feel better. Written petitions help a bit, but the only thing that really makes any difference on something like this is writeing your representative (with pen and paper) and letting them know exactly how you feel on the subject.

I see this all the time, yet no one has presented any facts on whether online petitions are valid or not.

I agree that written petitions by individuals are great because you can say in more detail your own feelings on the subject. And since you are writing the letter as an individual with your individual address on it, you will likely get a response back, whether it is positive or negative. I've written letters to my senators and representatives myself, often getting a response back. Some supporting me, some not.
But, you cannot say online petitions do not make it to its destination and never work. Since most people who sign online petitions don't put their full home address down, how can the person recieving the petition know to whom to respond back and what politician and their secretaries is going to respond to thousands of signatures at one time?
What could help to insure that the signatures of an online petition gets to the person it is being sent to is to make a print out of the signatures as a backup, sent it to the whomever it is addressed to and explain that the copy was sent to confirm that these signatures were signed in case that the online petition never got through due to some technical error or whatever.
All you have to do for an online petition is type in your name and e-mail address. You don't have to give any other information and your e-mail address is not shown if you don't want it to. So you tin-foil hat types don't have to worry about Big Brother coming to get you because you signed your name in favor of a AWB sunset.
So what is so time consuming and a waste of time about it?
