I was at a gun show today when I ran into a guy that sold me a nice Poly Tech Legend. He told me that he knew someone at the show with a Poly with a fixed stock and underfolder bayo who would take $750 for it. When the guy showed up, he told me that he had never fired the rifle, had owned it for several years, and didn't think that the original owner had fired it either.

Thru the mag hole, the bolt looked great, nice and clean with no obvious marks from repeated firing. I then removed the receiver cover. The hammer looked like it had been at least dry fired. BUT... when I looked at the rear of the receiver, there was an impression of the bolt and carrier beaten into it. There was no doubt that this rifle had been fired quite a bit, with a good possibility that the bolt and carrier were replaced to make it look new. A BUFFER WOULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS!!! That wasn't the only reason that I didn't buy the rifle, but is was a dead give-away that the guy was either not telling the truth, or was lied to by the original owner.

So, to those who ask, "Why do I need a buffer in my AK variant?", a possible answer is to keep the receiver looking nice and new.

Oh yes, to those wondering what else I found. On a pre-ban AK with a muzzle device, most do not fit tightly and a little carbon is deposited on the back of the device (brake, flash hider, muzzle nut) and if the build up is sufficient, it will create a powder ring of hard carbon, another tell-tale that the firearm is not new.

Blackjack buffers, for that new AK look. :D
