Well,
I spent 4 days refinishing my wood on the "new" Maadi. The Wood looks alot better. I had to order a new pistol grip from Ace as mine came with cracks in it. I also am going to do the Brownells bake on finish route.

I am curios. I heard that when it comes to Maadi rifles, it is the luck of the draw as far as finish. For those of you with them, could you describe the metal finish of your rifles when you got them? That is the roughest part of mine. Some chips and uneven finish areas especially on the right side. Also, what shape was your gas tube takedown lever in? Mine looks like they bent it so that it would be snug.

I hope that the bake on finish looks good when I am finished. By the way, do I have to strip the paint off the metal? Some say yes and some say no. I would rather not have to do that.

I refinished my Maadi MISR over the holidays and the result was fantastic! You can't even tell it's a Maadi anymore LOL. If you want the Brownells baking lacquer to look the best it can you should lightly sand the hole gun and remove any rough edges. It's well worth the effort. BTW my MISR looked like crap when I bought it (all scratched up) but the sights were straight.

Is it absolutley necessary to bake the gun?

From what I have been reading on this sight about refinishing the receiver with Brownells bake on paint, the best results come after baking it on. When I finish this project, I'll get some pictures posted.

Today I worked on it some more, I buffed the black paint off of the bolt carrier. I used a friends belt sander believe it or not. I had to have a real light touch as Sometimes I removed a little metal. It actually evened out the metal and made it smooth. Then when I got home I used 120, 150, and then 180 grit sand paper to polish it. It looks fantastic and just buffing the bolt carrier improved the looks of the rifle considerably.

I recommend doing that to anyone with a beat up maadi. Underneath all that yucky paint is a beauty I believe.

Took my Maadi out to shoot for the first time. The only real problem is that after a few rounds the mag release wedges itself in sooo tight that I can't hardly pull it back to release the mag. What would be the best way to fix this anybody?

Well, tonight I got restless and went to checker auto parts and got some of their spray on heavy duty paint stripper. Did two treatments, and it worked great. Then I took a wire brush and brushed off the paint that didn't rub off. So now the AK is down to the metal ready for when UPS delivers the Bake on Finish Monday. I took out all the fire control parts first of course, that took a little doing. I just hope I can get the darn thing back together.

I hope to post some pics when this project is finished.

Well, I just finished the reciever and barrel with the Brownell's product. I can't believe how good it looks. I hope it lasts as well.

Putting the machine back together tonight, try to get some pics up when I can

Just got my MISR 90 in, wasn't has bad as I thought. Would like to know a source for USA made wood stocks (the lighter in color the better). Also, when y'all talk about repainting the rifle, has anyone used the paint for headers and engine (high-temp) or is it special type of paint?
Can't wait to try shot it this weekend.
Thanks,
Roger
