I own a Makarov which I really like. I was also thinking of buying a Tokarev. Do they shoot as well and are they as easy to maintain as Maks? Where should I look for one and what kind of price should I be expected to pay? I'm not looking for any collectors type weapon. Just something I can put a lot of rounds down range with without too much expense or problems.

What do you guys think?

Thanks!!!

Great guns!
Very reliable, decent accuracy, and easy to maintain.

The design is less complicated than the Makarov.[hard to believe, but true]
Field stripping is extremely easy, and full strip down isn't real bad, although the Tok does have a couple of weird "squeeze" pins.

The most common are the Chinese made, there are also Polish ones going around, too. There are other types, like Russians, but most of these will be going for collector prices.
Poles usually go from $180-225.
Chinese about $100-200.
Personally I wouldn't pay more than $150 for a Chinese, but I've noticed the price has been going up lately.

I've had mine for awhile, so I'm not sure who has them, nowadays.

I have three, 2 Poles, and a Chinese Norinco 54-1.

The Poles have a much nicer fit, and finish.
I've seen a variety of Tokarevs over the years, and these Poles, are the best I've seen.
Forget the Polack jokes, the Poles make good guns, and their steel is the best, of any, of the eastern European nations.

The Chinese Toks are decent, but craftsmanship isn't one of their strong points.
They are however quite reliable, and even some real "beaters" I've shot, worked just fine.

The Tokarev is typical of "commie" guns, like the AK, and Makarov, simple, tough, and reliable.

Get one you won't be disappointed!

I won't get into the ammo, its a story itself.
I'll just say, it can be had for dirt cheap, and think "penetration"! :D

i think the polish tokarev is a great gun.you can get one that is like new from sog= southern ohio gun for 129.00 http://www.southernohiogun.com/surplus_hand.html

plus shipping and dealer costs,i think shipping is 10-12 dollars.

ours really does look new and shoots great,i dont think our was ever shot, its still so tight that sometimes i have to pull the slide a tiny bit between rounds to get it to go ahead.its only had about 50 roinds through it.from what they say the toks were made in poland in the 50s and put in crates until this now.we got a makk at the same time and i think the tok shoots just as well.

Thank you for the information. I'll take a look around and see if I can find one!

Thank you for the help. I had the same problem once in awhile with the Mak to get the rounds to seat. It's fine now. I'll take a look at the link you provide and see what comes up.

Thanks....

I ordered the lowest grade from SOG last year and it shoots good. It looks brand new except for the bluing being worn down on a small spot on each side of the slide at the muzzle like from being in a holster. You can still see the tool marks inside the slide so it wasn't shot much.

That's a nice price SOG has on those!

I might have to get another one,
or two. :D

I wonder where they are from? Couldn't find it on the website. Hopefully they are Polish. Everyone seems to prefer those in a Tokarev....

The Poles make good guns!

I have a Polish Mosin-Nagant M44 carbine.
Its far and away, the nicest of my Mosins, although I actually like my 91/59 better.[
The Pole has has a much nicer, fit, and finish. Its a very "solid" feeling rifle.
I wish the Poles would have made a 91/59.

Polish Tokarevs: Well built pistols, made with high quality steel..

Chinese Tokarevs: Loose tolerances, and questionable Asian metallurgy.

The only advantage the Chinese had, was they were dirt cheap.
With SOG's prices, there's no reason to not get a Polish Tok.

The Pole I have is one of the nicest M44s I've seen.
It caught my eye, at gunshow, a couple of years back.
Like new with all matching numbers, at that time most of the M44s, were mismatched Russian "beaters", I had one of those, too.

I also have a very nice Hungarian, but once again it pales, in comparison to the Pole.

I haven't seen any of the Russian ones, that are going around, now, but I've heard they are in like new condition.
I'm interested in seeing one of the laminated stock ones, from what I hear they're a nice one.

I've pretty much given up on M44s, though.
The side mounted bayo makes them feel unbalanced, and awkward.

The Pole is the most accurate M44 I've shot, but its not even close to what my 91/59, can do.

If you're looking for a nice Mosin carbine, I highly recommend the 91/59.
I believe Aim has them on sale this week.

I am really tempted to get a TOK for a "truck gun".
But that's what I bought my CZ52 for! :D
Oh,well at least I know I have a problem. And that's the fist step.

By the way, my uncle had a Norinco Tok that was in 9mm (Luger)
was it because it was a "for export" model?

I would think hard about using 7.62x25mm, for self-defense, its infamous for overpenetration.
Its like the Energizer bunny, it keeps going, and going, and going.....

The Chinese model 213 was a true 9mm, not a conversion, so I don't think they were strictly for export.
