These pics are so so. I stripped the wood, sanded, and used a tung oil/poly finish.
Then I removed all fire control parts, and stripped the receiver and barrel assemblies down to bare metal using an aircraft aluminum stripper from my friend Ken's auto parts store. Then after degreasing, I used the Brownell's bake on matte black finish that several have recommended, followed the directions. I put an Ace's FAL pistol grip on to replace the nasty cracked one that came with it. Overall, it was a good first experience having never done anything like this before. It looks alot better then when I opened up the box the first time I saw it. I did put on an adjustable rear site as the front site was canted to the left just barely enough to tell. If any of you have any questions about what I did, let me know.

p.s. I included the pics of my Russian sks to make some of you fellow sks lovers drool http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/wink.gif

Patrick,
Looks great! Did you refinish the stock on the SKS, too?

Hey Patsue,

Awesome job on the maadi......I am in the middle of redoing mine. Where did you get that grip....what is ACE's web address? And the metal refinishing looks fab. Where'd you get the stuff for it, again? I live in Ft. Collins if that helps....are there any shops on the Front Range that do any AK refinishing? I have heard of Rocky Mountain Arms in Longmont, but that's it. Lotta places up here in Larimer County that wanna sell AKs, but I cannot find anyone who is an "expert" gunsmith on AKs....

Any info appreciated, and congrads on your Maadi, it looks sweet.

The web address for ACE's is http://www.riflestocks.com/

The particular grip is in their products link and is the FN/FAL grip for the AK type rifle. The grip comes with it's own bolt that uses your T nut that is currently on your rifle. It looks good to me and is very comfortable. Much better then the one that came with the rifle. The part number is AKII3PG but you must call and tell them that you want the FN/FAL style as that is the same part number for the AR 15 style grip for the AK also. Go figure.

From Brownells (www.brownells.com) I ordered a can of their Aerosol Matte Black Baking lacquer. It is around 8 bucks a can and I think you could refinish 2 complete rifles with 1 can. You can order it on their toll free number. The part number is #083-046-801

As far as an AK gunsmith, I don't have a clue where one would be here in Colorado. I am new to AKs. I read on this site the stories of those who fixed their guns up themselves this way and it sounded like fun so I did it.

As far as the sks, it is same as it was when I bought the thing new at a gunshow here in Colorado Springs about 4 years ago. New in the box. Sling, ammo pouch, oil bottle, cleaning kit. All for 115 bucks!!! The guy had a table of these unissued Russians. Man oh man I wish I had bought 10 of them. Would have been a great investment. Oh well, at least I got one.
