Go big... That said I don't know what brands you like but I have had good luck with BSA for an inexpensive reliable scope. Let us know what you decide :)

I just heard about the BSA "Sweet 17" but I know nothing about it.

OTOH, I have a BSA red-dot that I'm happy with...

I've got a Simmons 3-9x50 on my .17 Rem 597. Lots of light and nice magnification at the usually distances that I shoot (50 yards). Elduce, a heads up, stick with the Hornady ammo if at all possible. I have both the Hornady and CCI TNT hollowpoints, and the CCI likes to hang up, whereas the Hornady feeds great. Also, stick with the metal mags, the plastic are junk!

Congrats on your Hummer purchase

On my Marlin 17 VS I have a Simmons M1048. It's a 6.5-20X44 obj. It's one of the 44 Mag series scopes. I like it a lot. It also has an adjustable objective and target turrets. I bought it from SWPA for $149.00. If I had to do it over again I would go with the same scope but the one with a mil-dot. The crosshairs are fine for hunting but if your going to target shoot they are a little thick when shooting at small bulls at about 50 yards.

Another scope to consider is the Bushnell Scopechief (Natchezz has them). It's a 3-9x40 IIRC. All the reviews I've read about them are very favorable. I haven't personally tried the BSA's but have heard a few things about them that aren't confidence inspiring. I'd personally get one of the two mentioned above myself.

I'd also tend to lean towards the Hornady ammo as well. Mine just doesn't like the CCI's.
The funny part is that the CCI's shoot decent groups. If I would have never shot the Hornady I'd still be impressed by the accuracy of the .17 HMR using them. After trying the Hornady's I was amazed at how well the gun shoots. The only downside is trying to find ammo. I'n my area at least the Hornady is tough to come by. I went to a gun show and only 1 vendor had a brick of it. I bought every box :D

BTW - at the WV shoot I was shooting out the reflectors on the side and back of the car that we blew up. :D

BSA is making a "Sweet 17" in both 4 power and a 4x12 power. Personally, I like more power. I'm using a 4x18 on mine.

The "Sweet 17" is supposed to be calibrated to the .17 cal. All you have to do is zero it, then the yardage on the turrents are set for how many yards out you want to shoot. If you know the distance, set the numbers on the turrent and caress the trigger!

I went to a gunshow today. I noticed, not only does BSA make a 4 power and a 4x12, but they also make a 2x7 power for the .17 cal. They're all marked off for the ballistics of the .17 cal in yardage. Once zeroed, set it for the known range, then squeeze the trigger! The round is supposed to be nuts on!

It sounds o.k but I prefer more magnification in my scopes.

I agree. I prefer more magnigication too. I have a 4x16x40 on mine. I'm thinking of getting something more powerful. I not only want to see the target, but where on the target I'm hitting.

On my better rimfires I have 6.5x18's and 8.5x32's. I too like to zoom in real close and see where the holes are on the target. On these powerful scopes at rimfire ranges adjustable objectives are extremely beneficial as well.

I have a 4-14X50 on my 17 and although it brings you up close at 100yds I really need one with a dot. The fine line reticle is to much or a blurr to center at 150 +

You got a scope that big on a chipmunk? :p That must look kinda funny...

I have a Simmons Whitetail Expedition 4-12AO on my 1022 magnum. You can get it from Natchez for $135. For some reason it is that price only outta their snail mail catalog and is more expensive online. you can prob phone em and they'd give you the catalog price.

I really like the scope and I am not a big Simmons fan, been spoiled by Leupolds. This is a very solid scope with nice features. I'd get another in a heart beat. Funny thing is it seems that Simmons stopped making em and Natchez has a supply of em. Too bad, I like it...

I have a BSA 12-24x40 mildot on my 77/17 and also on my ZOM451 22lr. Does great on both. Sportsman's Guide has the best deals.

One thing about hummers, besides getting addicted to the way groundhogs and squirrels explode, is if you're target shooting, you won't see your hits with anything less than 16 power at 100 yds. The holes are just too small. Five shot 3/8" to 1/2" single holes are not uncommon. So far none of the local clubs will allow hummers in rimfire competition. Apparently the greybeards have too much invested in their Anshutzs and don't want to be whipped by a $140 Wally World Handi Rifle.

Karl, I have a couple HMR's, one of which I built into a benchrest gun. This started life as a 10/22 mag and I have added a Lilja .17 match barrel, Kidd trigger, and custom cherrywood laminate benchrest stock.

Long story short, it will not surpass my Anschutz, Suhl, custom Hall/Lilja, or my custom Turbo/Lilja at 50 yards.

I don't compete with the .22lr at over 50 yards, so the hummer may perform better at greater distances.

The best I have done with either .17, (Marlin and Ruger) at 100 yards is right at .50 inches. There are folks who claim to shoot in the threes, but..........

If you know of the Postal Matches, the .17 has yet to de-throne the long rifle. Maybe some day, in the mean time I'll still have more fun with it than should probably be legal. :D GG

;) speaking from experiance. I'd try to find a Japanese made tasco target scope before tasco sold out and there scopes started being made in China Maybe on E-bay or what not. I have a 6x24x44mm and I love this little scope. I have it mounted on my single barrel .17 HMR, and she really drives tacks. But this is just my preferance :D Maybe this will help.
