First off, has anyone out there done one of these, that is, converting the .223 Romainian SAR3 from semi to select? Secondly, if so, how. I work for an 02/07 and we jumped into doing one off the cuff and now have come upon the issue of the "shortened bolt". The way I see it, there are a number of ways one could go about getting around this but I'd be curious to see what experience others on the board have, if any. Has anyone tried the .223 KVAR bolts? Do they measure out the same in overall length or are they standard AK length? Thanks in advance for any input.

I would hazzard a guess that since most of us are not class 2 manufacturers, we don't have a freakin' clue as to what you want to accomplish. When we want machine guns, we rent them at the range of go see a class III and purchase one. Best of luck in your endeavors..

Hey man,
Just because I work for an 02 SOT doesn't mean I know it all; to the contrary, we just picked up the SOT status so some of the FA stuff is pretty new to me. We had some interest from a local PD on this so we figured we'd start looking into doing a couple SAR3's in select fire as Post May samples. Being that the gun is pretty new and that the Romanians seemed to "improvise" (and I use that term loosely) to make it work, there's not alot of tech info out there on this gun. At any rate, I'd appreciate any info on this topic that anyone could give. We've done a bunch of the 7.62 x 39 Egyptian AK's without a hitch. To be honest, I didn't figure this would be that different. Oh well, live and learn.

I am curious as to what is diffrent about converting a AK-47 and the SAR-3. I figured it would be the same. What is not working for you? I would be very interested in knowing what the internal diffrences are.

I wouldn't consider changing any of the SAR's to select fire because their sheet metal receivers are too thin to last very long under full auto creating a very dangerous situation..go with a stamped Chicom,Yugo or Milled Bulgie

You mean the same receivers that nearly every full-auto AK in the world uses?

Ned,
I couldn't agree with you more. I posted this a while back shortly after my partner got our 07/02 SOT. I never thought to post an update but people keep reviving this thread so here it is:
After much nashing of teeth, research, and taking measurements, the bastardized SAR3 was born again hard as a Post-86 dealer sample. What did it take to get it there? Well, an AK-74 bolt carrier for starters. As near as I can tell, it is dimensionally close enough to the SAR3's carrier with of course the addition of the sear trip. Additionally, the hammer needed to have material removed from it and the contour changed slightly so as to give it a clean strike on the rear of the truncated bolt. Also, a small amount of material needed to be removed from the rear of the bolt carrier to prevent the hammere from hanging up.
All in all, it was an interesting project. FYI, in answer to the last posters comment about receiver thickness, without getting into the measurements amongst various AK receivers, I've found nothing regarding the SAR line that makes them less fit for full auto fire than any of the others Kalashnikov clones out there. We also did a SAR2 (AK 74) as a post and it rocks. It's got over 2K rounds without a hitch.
