I just bought a pre-ban Steyr Maadi. I have to admit that I was surprised that it has the same thick, glossy black paint finish that the post ban US receiverd guns have. Is this the correct finish for the pre-bans? The wood is a very nice laminated set, with a brown plastic pistol grip. Since the Steyrs are supposed to be very close to the Soviet military issue, do the Ruskie guns have the same finish? I guess there is something to be said for the Egyptian gloss black, as the rifle and mag are fine and the East German 30's and 40's that were included in the deal all show varying degrees of rust. How does everyone like their Steyrs?

The barrels for the SLR's are Steyr hammer-forged. Mine fires wonderfully and accurately. Bought a Bulgarian military rifle parts kit from Kvar with a Steyr barrel as well, can't wait to find a milled Bulgarian receiver at a fair price and get it all put together.

Hello

I just got a Styer Maadi my self, while it was sold to me under false pretense I still love it. The black finish is standard on the pre-ban guns and they all come with the brown pistol grip. They have a great trigger don't they?? very crisp?? I bought a Russian side folding stock several weeks ago (not the skeletonized para trooper). I am going to have that mounted in the next couple of weeks. When I bought my rifle I was under the impression from the seller that it was New no box. Instead it was very used and I am in the process of charging him. While I was not happy with the lies that I was told I love the weapon. How much did you buy yours for I got mine $1300 and am in the process of getting a refund.

Sincerely

I paid $900 for mine. It has the majority of the black remaining. The only dings are where the selector moves and a few spots on the receiver cover, maybe from brass. The wood is beautiful and un-marred. Mine came with the original Egyptian mag, two EG 30's and an EG 40 rnd. Also included was a STURM EG bayonet in like new condition and an anonymous black plastic handled bayonet (with no wire cutter features) in well used condition. One thing though, somewhere along the line someone has done a terrible job of attaching a scope mount to the receiver. There is a steel pin running through the rear of the receiver and a corresponding hole was drilled in the right side receiver wall for it. The mount appears to have been "glued" to the metal as well, as I can see residue around the sides of it. In any case, the whole thing is worthless as it shakes and wiggles on its pins.

I have also ordered a K-VAR kit, a .223 folder, and plan on having Mike@MSC build the rifle using the Maadi's receiver. Maybe he can take this scope mount off and fill in the holes, or do a professional job of installing a mount. I guess I need to find a receiver to put the Maadi's remaining parts onto to have a whole rifle again. Any suggestions? Should I go with an American receiver, like a Krinks or Soupbowl, to help me with the US parts count, or just say screw it and buy a new Egyptian receiver? Whaddya all think? How are you going to legally build a rifle using a K-VAR milled kit and a Bulgarian Milled receiver, if you can find one?
