1) How the heck do you remove the upper handguard wood off of the gas tube? I'm able to remove all of the other wooden furniture.
I have a Misr Maadi 7.62x39 which accepts the double stack mags, so I assume it's a Misr-90 type. The instruction booklet says it's an adaptation of the AKM rifle - semi auto only, non threaded barrel, 4 grooved rifling.
Serial number is CM 12547.

2) If you all are interested, "Misr" is Arabic for "Egypt", and "Maadi" is "the most recent" or "latest". I found it kind of oddly redundant when I was in the shop and they showed it to me, saying it was an Egyptian Misr. As for the odd factory mark on the butt plate, the letter that looks like a 7 with the tail of it curling to the right in a circle represents their J sound, which is the first letter in their word for company or group. It is only missing the dot below the letter, but they omit dots for art's sake sometimes.

I was kind of disappointed when I saw her receiver didn't sport any cool Arabic script on there, and there were standard English numbers on the sight. But what does the P stand for, just aft of the 100m marker? Point blank? Paratrooper? Potted Meat?

And by the way, I love CLP. My Army girlfriend got me hooked on the stuff and it's the only thing I'll squirt on my rifles and revolvers.

Great googly moogly.

Don't confuse your rifle with a Misr-90 which was an Egyptian receiver/Chinese parts "built in the US" monstrosity that has never received a good review. Your rifle is probably much better that these. Misr is the name of the AKM builr at Factory 54 in Cairo. The name of the manufacturer is Maadi Military and Civil Industries Company. The factory was originally set up with help from the Russians. The fully selective fire military version is known as "ARM," which stands for Automatic Rifle Misr. Normally, there is a stamped logo of a stylized Egyptian pharoah headress, with the numbers "54" around it, somewhere on the receiver or on the rear sight base.

I just posted a topic on the same thing. After reading this my best bet is, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Come to think of it, if I can look at myself in the mirror I can look at my AK.

About those upper guards - getting 'em off is sometimes NOT as simple as described.

I was lucky enough to get TWO Maddi's several years ago. The upper HGs had been installed while the varnish was thick & wet - I had to carefully cut 'em in half, then clean out the crap wood stuck to the gas tube ends http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/smile.gif

Cobra, hand guard removal is as easy on the Maadi than any other Ak, place thegas tube assm. in a padded vise, the rotate the wooden handguard ccw and voila she comes off, have any probs drop me a line

Getting these Maadi UHG`s off can be a bitch. Bets to use a vice like everyone says, or do what I did and hold it steady with two hands while you have someone turn with a crescent wrench.
