the recent discussion of identifying pre-ban maadis has got me wondering. Ive got one that seems to be pre-ban in all aspects, i.e. it has the threaded barrel, bayonet lugs, takes the old style hi cap magazines, the cleaning kit in the stock compartment, but has intrac's name stamped on the rcvr and not steyr. is this just a really early post-ban, or a pre-ban? the year code is not clear, it looks like either 83 or 93. Until the recent discussion , i thought it was pre-ban, but now im wondering.. any ideas?

Sorry man, its definitely post ban. That is a '93 you're seeing probably in an Egyptian crown, located on the rear sight block, right? I'm really sick of telling people this, as in, I'm glad to help you, but sad to have to keep giving people such bad news. I hope you didn't pay pre-ban price for it. I am losing track of how many times I've given this speech. A great many people have been screwed by a-holes who have done this to inexpensive post-ban Maadis and raised them up to pre-ban prices to fool the ignorant and make a quick buck. The worst part about it though is that anyone purchasing one of these is unwittingly turned into a felon. And it is not the stupid 89 Bush ban that you have to worry about but the much more serious 1994 Omnibus Crime Act, and all because of the threaded muzzle. Don't sweat it too much though, this law is rarely enforced as they'd have to send thousands of decent folks like yourself into the clink if they did, thus exposing the stupid and confusing nature of this onerous law. Have a slant cut compensator permanently attached to your rifle and you'll be in a lot better shape.
I have had a total of five Maadis over the years, four I still have, (two pre-ban Stery imports and two Intrac imports) there is no such thing as a pre-ban non-Stery Maadi, with one notable exception: back in the Eighties an individual got import permits to bring in a very small number of Maadis perhaps a few dozen. They are easily distinguished by the unique importer (his name?) and the fact that they have side folding stocks, very similar to East German stocks but with triangular metal flanges or wings on the end, hard to explain without a picture. In all my years of AK collecting I've never even seen one of the imports, although I have seen pictures of the Egyptian model that the imports were adapted from in Gulf War photos. These are so rare and collectable that the chances that you'd ever blindly acquire one and not know what you had are very slim indeed.

Atlas366 is correct. The ONLY pre-ban Maadi's you will find were imported by Steyr. All of them are stamped "Steyr, Secaucaus, NJ" on the right side of the reciever. If it doesn't say that, I don't care what any dealer/salesman tries to tell you, it ain't a pre-ban Maadi. If you want to know what all of the markings on a real pre-ban are, let me know.

Atlas mentioned that the law is rarely enforced. I was wondering if anyone had heard of it EVER being enforced. After all we are talking about an administrative ruling, or interpretation by ATF and not specific language in U.S. code. Do a search of U.S. code and find section 922(r). Regards.
