Here is a pic of the laminated wood stock formerly known as 'thumbhole'. I cut it down using a hand held jigsaw, and did the rest with a dremel. Stained /w one coat of sherwin williams orangewood stain(SW code 3108 @125% orange). Since I took this pic a few days ago, I have applied three coats of duplicolor clear engine enamel w/ceramic. Reagrds.

Are you sure you did that stock it looks factory to me. Real good job there. The stain you used is a stock item or did you have it special mixed?

I am happy with it. The key is in taking off a little bit of wood at a time. I eyeballed it using a german plastic stock as a model.
The stain is available at Sherwin Williams. It's called Orangewood (SW code is 3108 @125% orange). I orginally tried to get them to match a romanian front lower handguard, but their spectrometer can't read anything that has the high gloss finish like the rom wood. They start with a natural color base and custom mix it. I paid about $8.00 for 30.5 ounces. The butthole stock came off a maadi rpm. Here's a pic of it with rom wood and three coats of stain and clearcoat. Regards.

Hey Florgy, nice job!! http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/eek.gif
Does the SW 125% Orangewood color match the Rom orange handguards? I have a SAR-1 with perfectly matching orange guards, but the buttstock is a walnut color. I want to match up the buttstock to the handguards, not perfect, but very close. I was just wondering if the 125% orangewood would work. What do you thinK? http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/confused.gif

The orange on the rom handguard that I have has more of a red tint to it than my custom job. Of course, laminated wood will take the stain a little bit differently than solid wood. If you have SW mix you some of the orangewood stain, have them increase the amount of red pigment by about 10 or 15% and give it a try. Regards.

hmmmm - that's the first thumbhole I have ever seen that takes a buttstock cleaning kit http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/smile.gif I could JUST make out the inletting for the trap door butplate in the photo.
All the Maadi thumbhole stocks have the butt trap for the cleaning kit.
